Hello, everyone!
We will start practising Hiragana from this lesson!
From now on, we will study the 46 basic Hiragana characters in 5 lessons. Then I will explain the other Hiragana characters in addition to these 46.
In this lesson, I will introduce 10 Hiragana, from あ to こ.
If you have a textbook, please refer to page 24 of the 2nd edition textbook / page 20 of the 3rd edition textbook. There is a Hiragana chart.
If you don’t have a textbook, you don’t need to look at anything. Just look at the explanation of the Hiragana below and study on!
First of all, let me tell you about two things to remember before practising Hiragana.
The first one is about fonts.
As some of you may have noticed by now, Hiragana has a slightly different shape depending on the font.
If you have a textbook, please look at page 23 of the second edition textbook/page 19 of the third edition textbook. You can see Hiragana in different fonts. If you don’t have a textbook, please look at the diagram below.
In the lessons I use the font ‘BIZ UDMincho Medium’ (the font at the top of the diagram above), which is the most similar to the font in the textbook.
The second one is about accents.
In English, the accent is pronounced more strongly (stress accent). In Japanese, the accent is pronounced with a higher pitch (pitch accent). If the accent is different, the meaning is also different.
Take a look at the example below. The words that are pronounced with a higher pitch are in bold.

However, pronunciation varies from region to region, so you don’t need to worry too much! In this lesson, I will show you the accent in Tokyo.
This is what you need to know before you start practising Hiragana.
So, let’s start learning Hiragana together！
Hiragana あ, い, う, え, お
The Hiragana characters あ, い, う, え, お stand for Japanese vowels. If you remember these five characters, you can write my name あおい. It’s such a simple name, isn’t it?
Below you will find how to write each of the Hiragana and the words that use the Hiragana. Let’s practise a lot and learn them all!
※ An adjective あおい means blue and it is written with Kanji like 青い.
My name is also pronounced same as the adjective, but it is a noun and a name of a flower.
The Kanji is 葵 which is pronounced like [aoi], so the accent is different.
These are the Hiragana characters from あ to お.
The characters あ and お are similar in shape, so don’t confuse them!
Hiragana か, き, く, け, こ
The next five characters are か, き, く, け and こ.
The characters か, き, く, け and こ are combinations of the vowels [a], [i], [u], [e], [o] with the consonant [k].
As I mentioned at the beginning, the shape of the letter き changes with different fonts. It is a good idea to look at different fonts and compare the differences in shape.
These are the Hiragana characters from か to こ.
Let’s practise writing the Hiragana according to the instructions so that you can learn to write them well! I think I’d better practise too.

If you don’t have a workbook, please write each of the Hiragana you have studied in this lesson ten times carefully. When you write them, read the Hiragana while you write them so that you can remember how to pronounce them!

このレッスンから、さっそくひらがなの練習（れんしゅう）を始（はじ）めます！
これから、基本（きほん）のひらがな46文字（もじ）を、5回（かい）のレッスンで勉強（べんきょう）します。 それから、この46文字（もじ）の他（ほか）にあるひらがなについて説明（せつめい）します。
今回（こんかい）は、「あ」から「こ」まで、10個（こ）のひらがなを紹介（しょうかい）します。教科書（きょうかしょ）がある人（ひと）は、第二版（だいにはん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の24ページ/第三版（だいさんぱん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の20ページを見（み）てください。ひらがなの表（ひょう）があります。
教科書（きょうかしょ）がない人（ひと）は、何（なに）も見（み）なくていいです。下（した）にあるひらがなの説明（せつめい）を見（み）て、勉強（べんきょう）しましょう！
まず、ひらがなを練習（れんしゅう）する前（まえ）に、二（ふた）つ注意（ちゅうい）があります。
一（ひと）つ目（め）は、フォントについてです。
もう気（き）が付（つ）いた人（ひと）もいるかもしれませんが、ひらがなはフォントによって形（かたち）が少（すこ）し違（ちが）います。
教科書（きょうかしょ）がある人（ひと）は、 第二版（だいにはん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の23ページ/第三版（だいさんぱん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の19ページを見（み）てください。 いろいろなフォントのひらがなが書（か）いてあります。教科書（きょうかしょ）がない人（ひと）は、下（した）の図（ず）を見（み）てください。
レッスンでは、教科書（きょうかしょ）のフォントに一番（いちばん）似（に）ている “BIZ UDMincho Medium”（上（うえ）の図（ず）の一番（いちばん）上（うえ）のフォント）を使（つか）います。
二（ふた）つ目（め）は、アクセントについてです。
英語（えいご）では、アクセントがあるところを強（つよ）く発音（はつおん）します(ストレスアクセント）。日本語（にほんご）は、アクセントがあるところを高（たか）く発音（はつおん）します(ピッチアクセント）。アクセントが違（ちが）うと、意味（いみ）も違（ちが）います。
下（した）の例（れい）を、見（み）てください。高（たか）く発音（はつおん）するところは、太（ふと）くなっています。

でも、発音（はつおん）は地方（ちほう）によっても違（ちが）うので、あまり心配（しんぱい）しなくて大丈夫（だいじょうぶ）ですよ！このレッスンでは、東京（とうきょう）のアクセントを示（しめ）します。
これが、ひらがなを練習（れんしゅう）する前（まえ）に、知（し）っておくポイントです。
それでは、一緒（いっしょ）にひらがなの勉強（べんきょう）を始（はじ）めましょう！
ひらがな「あ」「い」「う」「え」「お」
ひらがなの「あ」「い」「う」「え」「お」は、日本語（にほんご）の母音（ぼいん）です。この5文字（もじ）を覚（おぼ）えると、私（わたし）の名前（なまえ）「あおい」が書（か）けます。簡単（かんたん）な名前（なまえ）ですよね。
下（した）に、それぞれのひらがなの書（か）き方（かた）と、そのひらがなを使（つか）った単語（たんご）を紹介（しょうかい）します。たくさん練習（れんしゅう）して、覚（おぼ）えましょう！
※形容詞（けいようし）の「あおい」は、漢字（かんじ）で書（か）くと「青い」です。
私（わたし）の名前（なまえ）の漢字（かんじ）は、「葵」です。
「葵」は花（はな）の名前（なまえ）で、名詞（めいし）です。「葵」の発音（はつおん）は、「あおい」です。
これが、ひらがなの「あ」から「お」までです。
「あ」と「お」は形（かたち）が似（に）ているので、注意（ちゅうい）しましょう！
ひらがな「か」「き」「く」「け」「こ」
次（つぎ）は、「か」「き」「く」「け」「こ」です。
「か」「き」「く」「け」「こ」は、母音（ぼいん）の「あ」「い」「う」「え」「お」と子音（しいん） [k] の組（く）み合（あ）わせです。
最初（さいしょ）に注意（ちゅうい）しましたが、「き」はフォントが違（ちが）うと、形（かたち）も変（か）わります。いろいろなフォントを見（み）て、形（かたち）の違（ちが）いを比（くら）べてみるといいですよ。
これが、ひらがなの「か」から「こ」までです。
書（か）き方（かた）のとおりに書（か）く練習（れんしゅう）をして、上手（じょうず）に書（か）けるようになりましょう！私（わたし）も練習（れんしゅう）します！

それでは、クイズタイム！
このレッスンで勉強（べんきょう）したひらがなについて、簡単（かんたん）なクイズを出（だ）します。クイズの答（こた）えは、次（つぎ）のレッスンの最初（さいしょ）で説明（せつめい）します。

ワークブックがある人（ひと）は、ワークブックにあるひらがなの練習（れんしゅう）をしましょう。第二版（だいにはん）のワークブックは117ページ、第三版（だいさんぱん）のワークブックは121ページが宿題（しゅくだい）です。
ワークブックがない人（ひと）は、このレッスンで勉強（べんきょう）したひらがなを、それぞれ10回（かい）ずつていねいに書（か）いてください。書（か）く時（とき）は、ひらがなを読（よ）みながら書（か）きましょう！ ひらがなの発音（はつおん）と文字（もじ）を一緒（いっしょ）に覚（おぼ）えられますよ。
それでは、今回（こんかい）のレッスンはこれで終（お）わりです。
