Many of the letters from ナ to ホ in Katakana are easy. Have you learnt them all? Check your answers!
Katakana Quiz 7: Make pairs of Hiragana and Katakana.
How was it? へ is easy to remember because it has the same form as Hiragana and Katakana. Other Katakana are also easy to learn.
Both Hiragana and Katakana are made from Kanji. The shapes of Hiragana and Katakana, which are made from the same Kanji, can be completely different. It’s interesting, isn’t it?

Katakana Quiz 8: Read the Katakana words below.
- ノート [nooto]
- ビジネス [bijinesu]
- インターネット [intaanetto]
- バナナ [banana]
- ページ [peeji]
Words written in Katakana, such as those above, are called ‘Katakana words’. The accent in Katakana words is usually at the beginning of the word. However, the accent in number 5, ページ, is at the end in Japanese. It’s in the opposite position to the accent of the original English word.
Some Katakana words, such as ページ, have accents that differ from the original word. And some words, such as コンセント [konsento] (It means ‘socket’ in Japanese, not ‘consent’ in English), have different meanings in Japanese and English. Be careful!
It is a good idea to check the meanings of Katakana words in a dictionary to learn them. I recommend jisho.org as an online dictionary.

Well done to those who got everything right!
The first word スーパー means either super or supermarket in English. Japanese people often shorten long words. Usually only the first part of the word is used.
All words except スーパー have the same meaning as in English. ネイティブ (ネイティヴ) has become more common in recent years, but is still used less frequently than other words. There may not be many people who understand and use the original meaning of English.
Let’s start the Katakana lesson! Katakana lessons will end this time and next. There’s only a few more to go!
In this lesson, you will study the Katakana characters from マ to ヨ. If you have a textbook, look at page 28 of the second edition textbook/page 24 of the third edition textbook. There is a Katakana table.
If you don’t have a textbook, you don’t need to look at anything. I will explain it to you, so let’s study together!
Katakana from マ to モ
The Katakana characters マ to モ are easy. The rest of the Katakana forms, except for モ, are not similar to Hiragana, so you need to learn the Katakana forms. Let’s learn them a little at a time!
Below you will find a Katakana writing order chart and tips on what to look out for. Remember the Hiragana forms with the same pronunciation in pairs!
The マ line, on the other hand, is written straight from the top left to the bottom right.
If you write the dots straight from left to right, you get the Kanji for 三.
The key to writing the Katakana character ミ is to write the dot diagonally.
The Katakana ム is formed by taking part of the Kanji character 牟 [mu].
Therefore, it has the same shape as one part of the Kanji.
Be careful not to mistake ア for マ! Other Katakana are easier, so you should be fine.
Katakana from ヤ to ヨ
There are only three from ヤ to ヨ in Katakana.
The Katakana character ユ should be written with a long line downwards.
If you make the horizontal line of the Katakana ユ a little longer than the one on the stroke order chart, you are less likely to mistake it for コ.
The characters ユ, コ and ヨ are confusing because they are very similar in shape. Look carefully at the shapes of each Katakana and practice writing them with care!

If you don’t have a workbook, first write the Katakana you studied in this lesson 10 times each. It is a good idea to write Hiragana and Katakana in pairs, as in the quiz above. Review Hiragana together with Katakana practice.

1番（ばん）の「スーパー」は、英語の ‘super’ か、’supermarket’ の意味（いみ）です。日本人（にほんじん）は長（なが）い単語（たんご）をよく短（みじか）くします。たいてい単語（たんご）の最初（さいしょ）の部分（ぶぶん）だけにします。
1番（ばん）以外（いがい）の単語（たんご）は、全（すべ）て英語（えいご）と同（おな）じ意味（いみ）です。「ネイティブ/ネイティヴ」は、最近（さいきん）よく聞（き）きます。でも、他（ほか）の単語（たんご）より使（つか）わないので、英語（えいご）の意味（いみ）がよくわからない日本人（にほんじん）もいるかもしれません。
それでは、カタカナのレッスンを始（はじ）めましょう！カタカナのレッスンは今回（こんかい）と次回（じかい）で終（お）わりです。あと少（すこ）しですよ！
このレッスンでは、カタカナの「マ」から「ヨ」までを勉強（べんきょう）します。教科書（きょうかしょ）がある人（ひと）は、第二版（だいにはん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の２８ページ/第三版（だいさんぱん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の２４ページを見（み）てください。カタカナの表（ひょう）があります。
教科書（きょうかしょ）がない人（ひと）は、何（なに）も見（み）なくていいです。私（わたし）が説明（せつめい）するので、一緒（いっしょ）に勉強（べんきょう）しましょう！
カタカナ「マ」から「モ」
カタカナの「マ」から「モ」は簡単（かんたん）です。「モ」以外（いがい）はひらがなと似（に）ていないので、カタカナの形（かたち）を覚（おぼ）えなければいけません。少（すこ）しずつ覚（おぼ）えましょう！
下（した）に、カタカナの書（か）き順（じゅん）表（ひょう）と、気（き）を付（つ）けるポイントを書（か）きます。同（おな）じ発音（はつおん）のひらがなの形（かたち）を思（おも）い出（だ）しながら、ペアで覚（おぼ）えましょう！
点（てん）をまっすぐ左（ひだり）から右（みぎ）に書（か）くと漢字（かんじ）の「三」になります。カタカナの「ミ」は点（てん）をななめに書（か）くのがポイントです。
「ム」は漢字（かんじ）の「牟（む）」からできました。なので漢字（かんじ）の一部分（いちぶぶん）と形（かたち）が同（おな）じです。
「ア」と「マ」を間違（まちが）えないように気（き）を付（つ）けましょう！他（ほか）のカタカナは簡単（かんたん）なので大丈夫（だいじょうぶ）だと思（おも）います。
カタカナ「ヤ」から「ヨ」
カタカナの「ヤ」から「ヨ」は三（みっ）つだけです。
「ユ」と「コ」と「ヨ」は形（かたち）がよく似（に）ています。形（かたち）をよく見（み）て、ていねいに書（か）いて練習（れんしゅう）しましょう！
