In the previous lesson, we studied sentence patterns using the words ここ, そこ, あそこ and どこ. It was easy, so I hope you have learnt it by now.
The grammar we’re going to study this time is easy too!
Before starting the lesson, announce the answers to the previous lesson’s homework.

Quiz 1: Look at the illustration below and make sentences using the sentence pattern (noun)は ここ/そこ/あそこです.
- だいがくは あそこです。
- ゆうびんきょくは ここです。
- コンビニは そこです。
ここ: A place close to you
そこ: A place a little far from you
あそこ: A place far away from you
If you look carefully at the distance between the people and buildings in the illustration and answer the questions, you should be fine!

- ぎんこうは どこですか。 A. そこです。
- としょかんは どこですか。 A. あそこです。
- かさは どこですか。 A. ここです。

Emma is holding the umbrella, so the place for the かさ is ここ.

The answer to the question is (person)の noun です, indicated in blue.

Sentence pattern of a question: これ/それ/あれは だれの noun ですか
これ/それ/あれは だれの noun ですか is a question that combines これ/それ/あれ with ‘noun 1 の noun 2’.
First, let’s have a little review of ‘noun 1 の noun 2’!
Review of ‘noun 1 の noun 2’
Translate the following English text into Japanese.
- Emma’s friend.
- Hanako is a teacher of Japanese language.
- Ken’s younger sister is a student at ABC University.

This time, we will use a new question word: だれ.
だれ is ‘who’ in English.
So だれの noun is the meaning of ‘whose noun’.
The question これ/それ/あれは だれの noun ですか is used to ask who the objects around you belong to.
The answer is: (person)の noun です.
You can also answer: これ/それ/あれは (person)の noun です. But that is long, so it is easier and better to omit the これ/それ/あれは part and say (person)の noun です.

質問（しつもん）の答（こた）えは、青（あお）で示（しめ）した「(person)の noun です」になります。
今回（こんかい）は、「だれの noun」を使（つか）って、誰（だれ）の物（もの）かを聞（き）く練習（れんしゅう）です！

質問（しつもん）の文型（ぶんけい）：これ／それ／あれは だれの noun ですか
「これ／それ／あれは だれの noun ですか」は、「これ／それ／あれ」と「noun 1 の noun 2」を組（く）み合（あ）わせた質問（しつもん）です。
まず、「noun 1 の noun 2」を少（すこ）し復習（ふくしゅう）してみましょう！
「noun 1 の noun 2」の復習（ふくしゅう）
次（つぎ）の英語（えいご）を日本語（にほんご）に翻訳（ほんやく）してください。
- Emma’s friend.
- Hanako is a teacher of Japanese language.
- Ken’s younger sister is a student at ABC University.
答（こた）えは下（した）のPDFでチェックしましょう！
今回（こんかい）は、新（あたら）しい質問（しつもん）の単語（たんご）、「だれ」を使（つか）います。
「だれ」は英語（えいご）の ‘who’ です。
なので、「だれの noun」は ‘whose noun’ の意味（いみ）です。
「これ／それ／あれは だれの noun ですか」は、自分（じぶん）の周（まわ）りにある物（もの）が誰（だれ）の物（もの）か聞（き）く時（とき）に使（つか）います。
答（こた）えは、「(person)の noun です」になります。
「これ／それ／あれは (person)の noun です」と答（こた）えてもいいです。でも、長（なが）いので「(person)の noun です」の方（ほう）が簡単（かんたん）でいいです。
