It was Valentine’s Day on 14th February. I hope you all had a lovely day.
As many of you already know, Valentine’s Day in Japan is a little different from other countries. In this article, I would like to introduce a few things about the unique Japanese Valentine’s Day.
Chocolate is a classic gift
Chocolates are the standard gift for Valentine’s Day in Japan.
There are many theories as to why it is chocolate, but the short answer is that it was for commercial reasons to increase sales of chocolate. I’m not a big fan of chocolate, but I’m sure there aren’t many people who don’t like it. Chocolates are basically a safe gift for everyone.
Every year around Valentine’s Day, you can find creative gift chocolates all over Japan. Many of the Valentine’s Day chocolates are particularly beautiful to look at as well as to eat!
I said that chocolate is the standard, but in short, any kind of chocolate sweets can be given. For someone like me who doesn’t have a sweet tooth, a gift can be anything that has nothing to do with chocolate.
Mostly given by women to men
It’s the complete opposite of European culture. In Japan it is usually the woman who gives the man a gift such as chocolate. It is said that the custom of women giving chocolates to men to show their affection on Valentine’s Day in Japan started in the 1970s.
Nowadays, chocolate is not only given by women to men. There are many ways to give chocolates, such as buying chocolates for yourself as a reward (jibun choko), giving chocolates to your friends (tomo choko), or giving chocolates to those who have been good to you (giri choko/sewa choko).
White Day
Well, if you get a present from someone on Valentine’s Day, you have to give something in return. In Japan, one month after Valentine’s Day, on the 14th of March, is known as White Day. On this day, you are supposed to return the gift.
When it comes to giving something back on White Day, the basic idea is to give something that you think the recipient will enjoy. It depends on whether the recipient is a lover or a friend, but it seems that sweets are often given on White Day too.
I’ve heard scary stories about each gift of sweets has a different meaning (for example, marshmallows are said to mean ‘I don’t like you’), so you might want to do a bit of research before you give them (I didn’t know that at all though). Chocolates also seem to be popular these days.
In my image, I thought that for couples, the return gift on White Day would be accessories. But accessories and chocolates seem unfair in terms of price in some cases, and sweets are enough in return.
By the way, White Day originally started as a commercial reason to give sweets in return for Valentine’s Day. It is said that the reason why it is called ‘White’ is because marshmallows were sold, or because white is associated with pure love.
As an aside, we are a Japanese-Australian couple, so we tend to give each other gifts on Valentine’s Day. We don’t have a White Day. This year I made a chocolate mousse and my partner gave me flowers and a card.

2月14日はバレンタインデーでしたね。みなさんは素敵な一日を過ごされましたか。
もう知っている人も多いと思いますが、日本のバレンタインデーは他の国と少し違います。この記事では、日本ならではのバレンタインデーについて少し紹介したいと思います。
プレゼントはチョコレートが定番
日本のバレンタインデーのプレゼントは、チョコレートが定番です。
何故チョコレートなのかは諸説ありますが、簡単に言うとチョコレートの売り上げを伸ばすための商業的な理由だったようです。私はあまりチョコレートが好きではないですが、チョコレートが嫌いな人はそう多くないでしょう。万人受けする無難なプレゼントでもあります。
毎年バレンタインデーの時期になると、日本の至る所で独創的なギフト用のチョコレートを見かけます。バレンタインデーのチョコレートは特に見た目が綺麗なものが多いので、食べるだけでなく見るだけでも楽しめますね。
チョコレートが定番と言いましたが、要するにチョコレートを使ったお菓子なら何でもありです。また、私のように甘い物が好きではない人には、チョコレートとは全く関係のない食べ物などのプレゼントをすることもあるようです。
たいてい女性から男性へ贈る
ヨーロッパの文化と真逆ですね。日本ではたいてい女性が男性にチョコレートなどのプレゼントを贈ります。日本でバレンタインデーに女性が男性に好意を示すためにチョコレートを贈る習慣になったのは、1970年代からだと言われています。
現在は女性から男性だけではなく、自分にご褒美として買う「自分チョコ」とか、友達と贈り合う「友チョコ」とか、主にお世話になっている人に贈る「義理チョコ/世話チョコ 」とか色々あります。
ホワイトデー
さて、バレンタインデーに誰かからプレゼントをもらったら、お返しをしなければいけません。日本では、バレンタインデーの一か月後の3月14日は「ホワイトデー」と呼ばれています。この日に、バレンタインデーのお返しをすることになっています。
ホワイトデーのお返しについては、基本的に相手が喜んでくれそうなものを考えて贈ります。相手が恋人か友達かにもよると思いますが、ホワイトデーもお菓子を贈ることが多いようですね。
贈るお菓子によって意味が違うなんて言う怖い話を聞きましたので（例えば、マシュマロには「あなたが嫌い」の意味があるとか）、贈る前に少し調べた方がいいかもしれないです（私は全然知りませんでした）。最近ではチョコレートも人気のようです。
私のイメージでは、カップルの場合はホワイトデーのお返しはアクセサリーだと思っていました。でもアクセサリーとチョコレートでは場合によると値段的に不公平な感じがしますし、お菓子のお返しはお菓子で十分ですよね。
ちなみに、「ホワイトデー」はもともとバレンタインデーのお返しにお菓子を贈ろうと言う商業的な理由から始まったもののようです。「ホワイト」なのはマシュマロを売り出したからだとか、白＝純愛のイメージからきているとか言われています。
余談ですが、ウチは日豪カップルなのでバレンタインデーはお互いにプレゼントをあげることが多いです。ホワイトデーはありません。今年は私がチョコレートムースを作り、パートナーからはお花とカードをもらいました。
