Hello, everyone！
This time I’d like to introduce you to my hometown, Niigata!
People often ask me ‘Are there any famous tourist attractions in Niigata?’ I always answer ‘Nothing’. (I know it sounds a bit harsh, but maybe the people of Niigata will understand.) This is because I don’t think there are many famous tourist spots that everyone has heard of, like in Tokyo or Osaka.
You may think that this sounds like a boring place to visit. It’s true that I can’t think of any fancy places to visit, but there are plenty of good things to do in Niigata, like food and nature.
So, in this article I’d like to share with you some of the things I think are great about Niigata!
Food and drink
Niigata is famous for its rice. Koshihikari rice from Uonuma is one of the most famous rice products in Japan.
I didn’t pay much attention to rice when I was in Niigata, but after living outside the prefecture I realised how delicious Niigata rice is.
These days there are many places outside of Niigata that produce good rice, but when you come to Niigata we want you to taste our delicious rice.
Personally, I also like edible wild plants (Sansai). They are only available in spring and are very tasty when eaten as tempura.
Niigata is by the sea, so of course you can enjoy lots of fresh seafood. The rivers also produce delicious salmon and a variety of other fish.
The city of Murakami in the north of Niigata is famous for its processed salmon products. There are many kinds of salmon products such as shiobikizake (salted salmon) and sake no sakabitashi (Dried salmon seasoned with salt. It is dipped in sake and eaten). If you get the chance, you should definitely give it a try!
I love salmon roe (Ikura), so in autumn I often ate salmon roe that my mother had pickled in soy sauce at home. In Niigata, fresh salmon roe can be bought relatively cheaply in supermarkets, so I was very happy to be able to eat my favourite food as much as I wanted at home.
Niigata is a rice-producing region, so rice cakes (Mochi) and rice crackers (Senbei) are delicious too. I recently found out that Wagyu beef is also delicious.
Isn’t it wonderful that the food from the sea, the rivers and the mountains are all delicious?
Another of Niigata’s specialities is sake.
Niigata is the prefecture with the largest number of sake breweries in Japan. Of course you can drink a lot of good sake. There are many different types of sake, some sweet and easy to drink, others dry. It is a good idea to try different kinds of sake to find out what you like.
If you want to try different kinds of sake from Niigata, Ponshukan is the place for you.
In the Ponshukan you can taste five small cups of sake for 500 yen. I went there with my friends once and we found it to be quite good value. But if you are not a good drinker, please note that it may be too much.
If you don’t drink alcohol, how about coffee or tea?
Yukimuro coffee is made in the snowy climate of Niigata. I haven’t tried it yet, but as I love coffee, I will give it a try next time.
For those who love black tea, I recommend Yukiguni Black Tea (Yukiguni Kocha) from Fujimien. This delicious black tea is made from tea leaves grown in Niigata.
Niigata may have a strong image of sake, but there’s more to Niigata than just sake – there’s also great coffee and tea!
Nature
There are many beaches in Niigata, but unfortunately some of them are not so beautiful. If you want to see a beautiful sea in Niigata, I recommend you to visit Sado Island (Sadogashima).
Sado Island is reached by boat from Niigata City. If you bring your own car on the boat, it takes two and a half hours, and if you don’t bring a car, some boats take just over an hour. I don’t remember the public transport system being very well maintained, so if you have a car it’s best to take it.
The main tourist attractions on Sado Island are Sado Gold Mine (Sado Kinzan) and Toki no Mori Park (Toki no Mori Koen). The sea is so beautiful you could go scuba diving! I think it’s a great place to relax and enjoy nature.
Takada Park (Takada Joshi Koen) is the most famous place for cherry blossom viewing in Niigata in spring. However, to be honest, cherry blossoms are beautiful anywhere, so you can go to any park to see them.
Niigata is a snowy country, so it is famous for its ski resorts. In recent years I have heard that it is also popular with people from overseas. In some schools in Niigata, there are skiing lessons. (My school didn’t have it, so I can’t ski.)
Winter in Niigata is generally dark and depressing, so it’s good to get out and enjoy the sport.
Niigata is blessed with an abundance of nature that can be enjoyed in any season. Sometimes it’s good to get out of the busy world and take a break in nature.
Sights
Well, I said at the beginning that there was nothing to see in Niigata, but I did some research to find out if there really is nothing to see.
First of all, when we talk about castles, two castles come to mind: Shibata Castle and Takada Castle. Takada Castle, as mentioned above, is a great place for cherry blossom viewing. Shibata Castle is also a garrison of the Self-Defense Forces, so some parts of the castle are not accessible. It’s a pity.
One of the most famous shrines in Niigata is Yahiko Shrine. I have been to visit the shrine several times. It has the largest torii gate (Ootorii) in Japan. Yahiko is also a very nice place with hot springs.
On a side note, I once worked as a miko (shrine maiden) at Hakusan Shrine in Niigata City for the New Year holidays. Hakusan Shrine is one of the biggest and most famous shrines in Niigata, as well as Yahiko Shrine.
I think the most famous temple is Honjoji. When I was a child, my mother and I went to see Oniodori (The demon dance. It is a traditional event held during the Setsubun Festival in February.) which was quite powerful. It’s not a big temple, but in spring the cherry blossoms are beautiful and in autumn you can enjoy the autumn leaves.
There is also Lake Hyoko, famous for its swans in winter. In addition to Lake Hyoko, swans can also be seen at Toyanogata Park. However, if you live outside the city centre of Niigata, you will probably see swans everywhere. I saw one in a rice paddy somewhere.
As you can see, there are still many interesting places to visit. I’ve never been to many of them myself, and I’d like to visit them next time I’m back in Japan!
In conclusion, I thought that Niigata is a good place to eat and drink delicious food and enjoy nature rather than to travel to tourist spots. Cherry blossoms in spring, the sea in summer, autumn leaves in autumn and snow in winter. No matter when you go, you can experience the beauty of each season.
I urge you all, once the pandemic has settled down and if you have time, to visit Niigata!

みなさん、こんにちは！
今回は、私の故郷である新潟を紹介します！
よく「新潟には何があるの？」と聞かれますが、いつも「何もない」と答えています。(ちょっとひどいですが、たぶん新潟県民は分かってくれます。）東京や大阪のように、誰もが聞いたことがある有名な観光スポットはほとんど無いと思うからです。
そう聞くと、何だかつまらなそうなところだなと思われるかもしれません。確かに派手な名所は思い付きませんが、食べ物や自然など、良いところはたくさんあります。なので、この記事では私が思う新潟の良いところをいくつか紹介したいと思います！
食べ物と飲み物
「新潟」と言えば、お米が有名ですね。中でも、魚沼産コシヒカリは日本人ならたいてい知っていると思います。
新潟にいた時にはあまりお米のことを気にしていませんでしたが、県外での生活を経験して改めて新潟のお米のおいしさに気が付きました。
最近は新潟県以外にもおいしいお米を作っている所がたくさんありますが、新潟に来た時にはぜひおいしいお米を味わっていただきたいです。
あと、個人的には山菜も好きです。春しか食べられない山の幸ですが、てんぷらなどで食べるととてもおいしいです。
新潟は海沿いなので、もちろん新鮮な海産物もたくさん楽しめます。川ではおいしい鮭や色々な川魚が獲れます。新潟の北にある村上市は鮭の加工品で有名ですよ。塩引き鮭とか鮭の酒（さか）びたしとか、色々あります。機会があったらぜひ試してみてください！
私はイクラが好きなので、秋になると母が家でしょうゆ漬けにしてくれたものをよく食べました。新潟では生イクラはスーパーで比較的安く買えるので、自宅で好きなだけ食べられるのがとても幸せでした。
新潟は米どころなので、お餅やおせんべいもおいしいです。最近知りましたが、和牛もおいしいようです。海の幸も川の幸も、山の幸もおいしいなんて、いいですよね。
新潟のもう一つの名産品は、日本酒でしょう。
新潟は日本で一番酒蔵が多い県です。当然おいしい日本酒もたくさん飲めます。日本酒にも色々あって、甘くて飲みやすいものもあれば、辛口のものもあります。色々試してみて、好きなものを探してみるといいと思います。
新潟の色々なお酒を試してみるのにお勧めなのが、ぽんしゅ館です。
ぽんしゅ館では、500円でお猪口五杯分の日本酒が試飲できます。以前友達と行きましたが、結構お得だと思います。お酒が弱い人には多いかもしれないので、ご注意ください。
お酒を飲まない人は、コーヒーや紅茶はどうでしょうか。
雪室珈琲は、雪国新潟の気候を生かして作られているコーヒーです。私はまだ飲んだことがありませんが、コーヒーが好きなので今度試してみようと思います。
紅茶が好きな人には、冨士美園の雪国紅茶をお勧めします。新潟で育てた茶葉を使用して作られたおいしい紅茶です。
新潟＝日本酒のイメージが強いかもしれませんが、新潟には日本酒以外にもおいしいコーヒーや紅茶もありますよ！
自然
新潟は海がありますが、残念ながらどこに行っても海が綺麗ということはないです。もし新潟で綺麗な海が見たいのであれば、私は佐渡島（さどがしま）をお勧めします。
佐渡島は、新潟市から船に乗って行きます。自家用車を船に乗せて持って行く場合は二時間半、人間だけの場合は一時間ちょっとで到着します。公共交通機関があまり整備されていなかった覚えがあるので、車がある人は車を持って行った方がいいと思います。
佐渡島の主な観光スポットは、佐渡金山とトキの森公園ですね。海が綺麗なのでスキューバダイビングをするのもいいですよ！佐渡島は自然を満喫してのんびり休暇を過ごすのに最適だと思います。
春に新潟でお花見をするなら、高田城址公園が有名です。ただ、正直桜はどこで見ても綺麗ですので、公園ならたいていどこでもお花見ができます。
新潟は雪国ですから、スキー場も有名ですね。近年では海外の人にも人気があると聞きました。新潟の一部の学校では、スキーの授業もあるそうです。(私の学校はありませんでしたので、私はスキーができません。）
新潟の冬は基本的に暗くて気持ちが沈みがちなので、積極的に外へ出て行ってスポーツを楽しむのもいいかもしれません。
新潟はどの季節でも楽しめる豊かな自然に恵まれています。時には忙しい日常を抜け出して、自然の中でゆっくり休むのもいいですよね。
観光スポット
さて、最初に「新潟には何もない」と言いましたが、本当に何もないのかちょっと調べ直してみました。
まず、お城について言うと、新発田（しばた）城と高田城が思い浮かびます。高田城は上述した通りお花見の名所です。新発田城は自衛隊の駐屯地でもあるそうなので、入れないところがあるようです。ちょっと残念ですね。
神社なら彌彦（やひこ）神社ですかね。私は何度かお参りに行ったことがあります。日本一大きい大鳥居があります。温泉もあって、とても良いところです。
余談ですが、私は新潟市内の白山神社で年末年始だけ巫女のアルバイトをしたことがあります。白山神社も新潟で有名な大きい神社の一つです。
お寺なら本成寺が有名だと思います。子供の時に母と鬼踊りを見に行きましたが、結構な迫力でした。そんなに広くはないですが、春は桜が綺麗ですし、秋には紅葉が楽しめます。
冬に白鳥が飛来することで有名な瓢湖（ひょうこ）もあります。 瓢湖以外にも、鳥屋野潟（とやのがた）公園などでも白鳥を見られます。 ただ、新潟の市街地以外に住んでいる人は、おそらく至る所で白鳥を目にしていると思います。私は何処かの田んぼにいるのを見かけました。
こんな感じで、探してみると興味深いところはまだたくさんあります。私自身行ったことがないところがたくさんあるので、今度日本に帰った時に訪ねてみたいと思います！
結論として、新潟は観光地を旅すると言うよりも、おいしいものを食べたり飲んだりして、自然を満喫するのに適した場所なのかなと思いました。春は桜、夏は海、秋は紅葉、冬は雪。いつ行ってもそれぞれの季節の良さを体感できます。
