Hello, everyone!
Have you heard of a free language learning app called Duolingo?
If you are interested in language learning, you probably know it.
Duolingo is a great app for language lovers like me, as it is basically free and allows you to study languages from all over the world.
I have been studying with Duolingo myself for two years now.
It’s well-designed that it’s hard to believe it’s a free app, so I’d love to share it with you in this blog!
As one of the users, I only introduce this app as a recommendation.
This is not an article to promote Duolingo. (Although I think it would be an advertisement in terms of content)
If you’re interested in Duolingo, with the following list of good points about Duolingo and what you’d like to see improved, give it a try!
What’s great about Duolingo
First, a summary of the key points.

- Many language courses to choose from
- Includes listening and speaking practice
- Each lesson takes about five to ten minutes to learn
Free of charge
Duolingo is available for free if you are fine with ads.
If you find the ads depressing, you can switch to the paid version.
Most free apps are only free for part of the course, but with Duolingo the whole course is free to learn.
In the free version, you lose a heart every time you make a mistake in a lesson, and if you make a mistake more than five times, you lose all your hearts.
Without hearts, you cannot do lessons, but you can replenish your hearts by practising lessons and using the coins you have accumulated from lessons.
I heard that the paid course has no heart limit so you can make as many mistakes as you like, but I think it’s better to practise with a limited number of hearts as it’s more challenging and you learn to be more careful not to make mistakes.
It is recommended that you save up on a daily basis, as you will quickly run out of coins if you try to replenish lost hearts with coins.
(Of course, it is possible to replenish hearts with real money, but I think that would ruin the greatest benefit of Dulingo)
If you happen to lose a coin, you can still get a heart with practice.
If you make too many mistakes and lose a heart, think of it as a chance to learn more!
I personally highly recommend this app for its thorough and free learning experience.
Many language courses to choose from
Studying more than one language at the same time is personally not recommended.
However, with Duolingo you can study as many languages as you want at the same time.
As well as popular languages with large numbers of speakers, such as English, Chinese and Spanish, you can also study minor languages such as Navajo and Welsh, which language geeks will love.
There are also several courses in artificial languages, such as Esperanto and the language used in the TV drama based on the book Game of Thrones.
Minor languages can be a struggle and expensive when trying to get the right materials, so it is helpful to be able to study a free trial.
I’m a language hobbyist, so basically I’ll study any language, but some languages don’t suit me.
With Duolingo, I don’t end up wasting my money on expensive textbooks, so I can start studying with confidence.
Includes listening and speaking practice
The most surprising thing about Duolingo for me was the speaking practice.
Quite some time ago, when I looked for free English pronunciation practice on the internet, I couldn’t find any at all. Even if there was a practice, it was only one and it was not enough.
So I think it’s great that Duolingo has speaking practice in every lesson.
Speaking practice is just reading out sentences, but it is quite useful because you can actually say and pronounce the language you are studying and have it checked.
Speaking practice is very important when studying a language in general, so even a little bit of it is very useful.
With Duolingo, example sentences are always read out loud, so that alone is good listening practice, but there are also listening exercises for each lesson.
Each lesson takes about five to ten minutes to learn
All Duolingo lessons require a short amount of time to complete.
You may think that a short time is not enough practice, but because it is short, you can practise in the little spare time you have and it is easy to make it a habit and keep it up.
It is not always better to study for longer periods of time. It is better to concentrate on it in a short time.
Of course, if you don’t understand a question at all and keep making mistakes, the practice time will be longer for that.
The good thing about the app is the comfort of being able to take lessons with just one phone, but if you can’t remember a word or grammar, it’s better to practise by writing it down in a notebook or something.
As well as the grammar explanations in the course, you may also want to read the explanations on the internet or in textbooks.
Improvements to Duolingo
Overall, it is a well thought-out and well-designed free app, but the following points were of concern when actually using it.
- Quality varies from course to course
- Audio is a little unnatural
- Practice is almost exclusively translation
- Many example sentences of no practical use
Quality varies from course to course
This may not be a particular problem for ordinary people, as they will probably study more popular languages such as English or Japanese.
However, for a geek like me who prefers to study only minor languages, the lack of grammar explanations is a matter of life and death.
For example, I am currently studying a Russian language course on Duolingo, which has no grammar explanations at all.
(It seems that the grammar explanations and reviews for all courses have been lost in a recent update. Very disappointing. (as of 5 Nov 2022))
As anyone who has studied Russian will understand, it is impossible to learn this language without a grammatical explanation.
I am able to continue my studies because I learnt a whole set of grammar during my university years.
Not only Russian, but any language cannot be studied without grammar.
Especially in languages with many changes of verbs and nouns, such as Russian and Japanese, it is impossible to change words without an explanation of the rules of change.
There is no point in studying if you only learn the bilingual sentences, unless you can make up your own sentences.
I studied Irish and Welsh for a while, but these two were often too minor or did not even have audio examples.
Of course, there are no grammar explanations at all. But I found both languages to have quite unusual grammatical structures, so I learnt very little just by practising translation with English.
Since there are also minor language courses, it would be even better if all the courses are designed to keep learners happy.
I understand that they are trying to think for the learners, but I just can’t ignore the fact that there is no grammar explanation at all.
I hope this will be remedied as soon as possible.
Audio is a little unnatural
It’s free, so I don’t think it can’t be helped, but the audio is still a bit weird.
If you listen to the audio in your own mother tongue course, you will see that it is somewhat strange.
However, for beginners who have just started studying from scratch, this slightly unnatural sound is an example to follow.
I thought after listening to the Japanese course that it might not be a good idea to use it as an example.
As an example from a Japanese course, the pronunciation of a word in a multiple-choice question may be different from the way it is pronounced when read in a sentence.
Learners are confused as to which pronunciation is correct and there are many homonyms in Japanese that have different meanings when pronounced differently.
It is well done for free, but it is still better to use the pronunciation of a native speaker of the language you are studying for the audio. There are lots of videos on the internet, so it’s not hard to find them.
I also don’t like the way the words in the multiple-choice questions are split up, perhaps as a trick question, by separating them in odd parts.
In Japanese, it is hard to tell whether a word is a particle or part of a word when there are consecutive Hiragana.
Practice is almost exclusively translation
Duolingo practice is essentially a translation between one’s mother tongue and the language of learning.
I think it is difficult to correct sentences made by learners because it is an app, but if you only translate, you will not improve your own writing skills.
There are also examples of questionable word translations.
In English courses, ‘soda’ is translated as ‘炭酸飲料 [tansaninryoo] (carbonated drink)’.
It is certainly not a mistake, but probably many Japanese say ‘ソーダ [sooda] (soda)’.
To begin with, the Japanese translation of the English course seems a little awkward overall, including the grammar explanation sentences.
When tapping on a word during practice, a hint translation would appear, but there were often examples that were not helpful. If the words are treated as idioms, it doesn’t make much sense to look at the meaning of each word. (Sometimes, though, they would lump them together as an idiom and give a hint.)
I have been frustrated by receiving incorrect answers on word order, even though I learnt at university that Russian is relatively tolerant of word order, like Japanese.
I recently noticed that if you are not happy with the corrections or have any problems, you can report them.
Tap the flag symbol in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen to bring up the report screen.
However, it is a bit difficult to mechanically determine the correct or incorrect answers, as there can be many different ways to translate a sentence.
Many example sentences of no practical use
Interesting example sentences may make learning fun.
But there is no point in learning sentences you can’t use.
Even if I could say in English, ‘My cat only speaks French’, I can’t think of a situation where I would use it.
At least I would like it to be ‘my friend’ or ‘my mother’.
As mentioned a little earlier, Duolingo’s practice is mainly translation, and there is no practice in making up your own sentences.
So learning example sentences is the ‘study’ in this app.
Yet, you don’t want to be taught example sentences that have no practical use.
Example sentences are not just anything, they are quite important.
If a teacher introduces grammar with inappropriate example sentences, students may not understand and may become confused.
Duolingo is a self-study app and there is no teacher, so if you remember something incorrectly, it will stick incorrectly.
This is not worth the effort of studying.
I would like them to use more practical examples in the lessons.
Conclusion
In order to give a fair assessment, the same number of good points and problems were mentioned.
Overall, the app is well made.
In fact, quite a few of my students were using it.
They said it was good for practising Hiragana and Katakana.
It’s true that practising characters by yourself tends to become monotonous, so I think it’s better to use an app and do it in a quiz format so you can keep doing it without getting bored.
As a Japanese teacher, I feel that studying Japanese with Duolingo alone is inadequate.
I think the best way is to use Duolingo as a daily study habit and learn grammar from your teacher at school or in private lessons.
Of course, it is a perfect app for enjoying language learning as a hobby.

Duolingoは基本的に無料で世界中の言語が勉強出来るので、私のような言語好きには大変ありがたいアプリです。
私自身にもう二年ほどDuolingoでの学習を続けています。
無料アプリとしてはよく出来たアプリなので、ぜひ今回のブログで紹介したいと思います！
ユーザーの一人としてあくまでお勧めのアプリとして紹介するだけです。
Duolingoの宣伝用の記事ではありません。（内容的には宣伝になってしまうと思いますが）
以下で紹介するDuolingoの良い点と改善希望点を参考にして、興味を持ってくれた方はぜひ試してみてくださいね！
Duolingoのすごいところ
最初にポイントをまとめておきます。
無料で利用できる
Duolingoは、広告ありで構わないなら無料で利用できます。
広告が鬱陶しい人は有料版に切り替えることも可能です。
たいていの無料のアプリの場合はコースの一部だけが無料だったりするのですが、Duolingoはコース全部が無料で学習できます。
無料版の場合は、レッスンで間違える度にハートが減り、五回以上間違えるとハートが無くなります。
ハートがないとレッスンができませんが、ハートはレッスンの練習をしたり、レッスンで貯めたコインを使って補充したりできます。
有料コースはハートに制限がないのでどれだけ間違えても大丈夫だそうですが、私はハートに限りがある状態で練習した方が緊張感があっていいと思います。
無くなったハートをコインで補充しようとするとあっという間にコインが無くなるので、日ごろから貯めておくことをお勧めします。
（もちろん本物のお金でハートを補充することも可能ですが、それだとDulingoの最大の良さが台無しな気がします）
万が一コインが無くなっても、練習すればハートを手に入れられます。
間違えすぎてハートが無くなったら、もっと勉強するチャンスだと思いましょう！
徹底的に無料で学習できるところが、個人的には大変お勧めです。
たくさんの言語のコースを選べる
複数の言語を同時に勉強することは、個人的にはお勧めできません。
ですが、Duolingoでは自分の勉強したい言語をいくらでも同時に勉強できます。
英語や中国語、スペイン語と言った話者数が多くて人気の言語はもちろん、ナバホ語やウェールズ語のような言語オタクには堪らないマイナー言語も勉強出来るのが魅力です。
エスペラント語やテレビドラマ（原作は本）の『ゲームオブスローンズ』の中で使われた言語など、人工言語もいくつかコースがあります。
マイナー言語は教材を揃えようとすると苦労する上に高くつくので、無料でお試しが学習できるのは助かります。
私は語学が趣味なので基本的には何語でも勉強しますが、言語によって合う合わないがあります。
Duolingoならせっかく買った高い教科書を無駄にする結果に終わることがないので、安心して勉強が始められます。
リスニングやスピーキングの練習もある
私がDuolingoをやってみて一番驚いたのが、スピーキングの練習があることです。
結構前ですが、英語の発音練習をしようと思ってネット上の無料練習を探した時、全然見つかりませんでした。練習があっても一つだけだったりして物足りないものばかりでした。
なので、Duolingoのレッスンには毎回スピーキングの練習があるのはすごくいいと思います。
スピーキングの練習と言っても文章を読み上げるだけなのですが、実際に勉強している言語を口に出して発音し、それをチェックしてもらえるのでかなり役に立ちます。
発話練習は総合的に言語を勉強する際にとても大事なので、ちょっとしたものでもあるに越したことはありません。
Duolingoの場合、例文がいつも読み上げられるのでそれだけでもリスニング練習にはなりますが、ちゃんとレッスン毎にリスニング用の練習問題があります。
一レッスンが5分から10分くらいで終わる
Duolingoのレッスンは、どれも短時間でできます。
短時間だと練習にならないと思うかもしれませんが、短時間だからこそ隙間時間に練習出来るし、習慣にして続けやすいです。
勉強時間は長ければよいと言うものではありません。短時間で集中して取り組んだ方がいいです。
もちろん、問題が全然わからなくて間違い続けるとその分練習時間が長くなります。
スマホ一つでレッスンできる快適さがアプリの良いところではありますが、どうしても覚えられない単語や文法はノートなどに書いて練習した方がいいです。
コースにある文法説明だけではなく、インターネットや教科書などの説明も読んでみるといいかもしれません。
Duolingoの改善点
全般的によく考えられて作られた無料アプリですが、実際に利用していて気になった点は以下の通りです。
コースによって充実度に差がある
普通の人は英語や日本語など人気が高い言語を勉強すると思うので、特に困らない問題かもしれません。
ですが、私のように好んでマイナー言語ばかり勉強しようとするオタクにとっては、文法説明が無いのは死活問題です。
例えば、私は現在Duolingoでロシア語のコースを勉強していますが、このコースには文法説明が一切ありません。
(最近のアップデートで全コース文法説明と復習が無くなったようです。大変残念です。（2022年11月5日現在））
ロシア語を勉強したことがある人なら解ると思いますが、文法説明なしでこの言語を学習するのは不可能です。私が勉強を続けられるのは、大学時代に一通りの文法を勉強したからです。
ロシア語だけでなく、どんな言語でも文法を抜きにして勉強はできません。
特に、ロシア語や日本語のように動詞や名詞の変化が多い言語の場合は、変化のルールの説明がないと単語を変化させられません。
対訳の文章だけ覚えたところで、自分で文章を作れるようにならなければ勉強している意味が無いです。
一時期アイルランド語とウェールズ語を勉強していましたが、この二つはマイナーすぎるのか例文の音声すらないことがしばしばありました。
もちろん文法説明は皆無です。でもどちらもかなり変わった文法構造を持った言語だと感じたので、英語との翻訳練習だけではほとんど勉強になりませんでした。
せっかくマイナー言語のコースもあるのだから、どのコースでも学習者が楽しく勉強を続けられるようになっているともっといいかなと思います。
学習者のために思考錯誤しているのだとは理解していますが、文法説明が全く無いことだけはどうしても無視できません。
可能な限り早く改善されることを願います。
音声が少し不自然
無料なので仕方ないかなと言う気もしますが、やはり音声は少し変ですね。
自分の母語のコースで音声を聞いてみると、なんとなく変な感じなのがわかると思います。
ただ、一から勉強を始めたばかりのビギナーにとっては、このちょっと不自然な音声が手本になります。手本にするのはあまりよろしくないかな、と日本語のコースを聞いて思いました。
日本語のコースの例ですが、選択解答の単語が文章で読んだ時と発音が違うことがあります。
どちらの発音が正しいのか学習者が混乱するし、発音が違うと意味が違う同音異義語も日本語にはたくさんあります。
無料にしてはよく出来ているのですが、やはり音声は自分が勉強している言語のネイティブスピーカーの発音を参考にした方がいいです。インターネットの動画でたくさんあるので探すのには苦労しませんよね。
ひっかけ問題のつもりなのか、選択解答の単語を変な所で区切って分割してあるのもちょっと嫌です。
日本語の場合、ひらがなが連続していると助詞なのか単語の一部なのか判別し辛いです。
練習はほぼ翻訳だけ
Duolingoの練習は基本的に自分の母語と学習言語間の翻訳です。
アプリなので作文の添削は難しいのだと思いますが、翻訳だけだと自分で文章を作るスキルは上達しません。
また、単語の翻訳が微妙な例もあります。
英語のコースだと ‘soda’ を「炭酸飲料」と訳しています。確かに間違いではないのですが、おそらく「ソーダ」と言う日本人が多いと思います。
そもそも、英語コースの日本語の訳文は、文法解説の文章を含めて全体的にちょっとぎこちない感じがしますね。
練習の時に単語をタップするとヒントの訳語が出てくるのですが、参考にならなかった例がしばしばありました。熟語扱いの場合は各々の単語の意味を見てもあまり意味が無いです。（熟語としてひとまとめにしてヒントを出してくれることもありますけどね）
ロシア語は日本語のように比較的語順に寛容だと大学で習ったのに、語順で不正解をもらって不満に思ったこともあります。
最近気が付きましたが、添削に不満があったり何か問題があったりした場合は報告できるようです。
画面右下の旗のマークをタップすると報告画面が出てきます。
ただ、翻訳は色々な訳し方があり得るので、正解不正解の判別を機械的にするのはちょっと難しいですね。
実用性のない例文が多い
面白い例文は勉強を楽しくしてくれるかもしれません。でも、使えない文を覚えても仕方ありません。
「私の猫はフランス語しか話しません」と英語で言えるようになっても、使う場面が思い付きません。
せめて「私の友達」とか「私の母」とかにして欲しいです。
先程も少し述べた通り、Duolingoの練習は翻訳がメインで作文はありません。
なので、例文を覚えることが勉強なんです。
それなのに、実用性がない例文を教えられても困ります。
例文と言うのは何でもいいわけではなくて、結構重要なんです。
教師が不適切な例文で文法を導入すると、学生が理解出来ないで混乱することもあるんです。
Duolingoは自習アプリで先生がいないので、間違った覚え方をすると間違ったまま定着します。
これではせっかく勉強した甲斐がありませんね。
レッスンで使う例文はもっと実用性があるものを多くしてほしいです。
おわりに
公平な評価をする為に、良い点と問題点は同じ数だけ挙げました。
総合的には良く出来たアプリだと思います。
実際に、私の学生でも使っている人が結構いました。
ひらがなとカタカナの練習をするのにいいと言っていました。
確かに、文字の練習は自分ですると単調になりがちなので、アプリなどを使ってクイズ形式でやった方が飽きずに続けられると思います。
日本語教師としてみると、Duolingoだけで日本語を勉強するのは心許無いです。
毎日勉強する習慣としてDuolingoを活用しつつ、学校やプライベートレッスンで先生から文法をしっかり学ぶのが最善の方法だと思います。
もちろん、趣味で気楽に言語学習を楽しむ分には申し分のないアプリです。
