Have you ever used a translation tool such as Google Translate? Translation tools make it easy to translate a single sentence into many different languages, which is very useful.
The articles on this site are written in both English and Japanese, but I actually use a translation tool when I write articles in English. It’s not that I can’t write in English at all, but I find it more efficient to use a translation tool.
However, please don’t think that translation tools are so useful that you don’t need to learn a language. It is true that modern translation tools are very good, but they are not perfect. You should always check the translation yourself.
That’s why in this article I would like to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of using a translation tool, give you some tips on how to use them, and introduce you to a translation tool that I use and recommend.
Advantages of translation tools
The advantage of a translation tool is, of course, that anyone can easily translate from one language to another.
Many of them are free and are very useful because they allow you to translate the same text into many different languages at once. You don’t even need to know the language you want to translate into, so you can use it as an interpreter when you travel.
You can use it not only to translate sentences, but also to look up a word or phrase.
Disadvantages of translation tools
The disadvantage of translation tools is that they tend to result in unnatural translations.
Translation tools basically translate words in one language by replacing them with words that have almost the same meaning in another language. Therefore, if there are no words with similar meanings in both languages, they cannot be translated, and even words with similar meanings may have different nuances.
You can translate into a language you don’t know, but in that case you cannot be sure that the translation is really correct. There is a possibility that you may say something strange unintentionally.
Tips for using translation tools
As you can see, translation tools are useful, but unfortunately they are not perfect. Still, I think there are quite a few situations where you might want to use them.
Below are two precautions I take when using a translation tool. Both are obvious but important and should be kept in mind when using a translation tool.
1. Keep sentences short and clear.
This is the first rule. As mentioned above, translation tools translate by replacing words, so the longer and more complex the sentence, the less accurate it tends to be. It is better to translate two short sentences than one long one.
Also, it is better not to omit subjects or words. In Japanese we often omit the subject, but in English we don’t. So if you translate a Japanese sentence without a subject into English, it will look strange. Modern translation tools are so good that they will fill in the subject for you, but this is often not what you intended. Always check the translation yourself.
And the expressions and words that are specific to a language cannot be translated. For example, 着物 [kimono] can only be translated as ‘kimono’. In such cases, you need to rephrase the word or expression in a different way. For example, ‘kimono’ can be translated as ‘traditional Japanese costume’.
But it is also important to note that different languages use different phrases. For example, The Japanese word 鉄則 [tessoku] is translated as ‘the first rule / the number one rule’ in English. Even it literally means ‘iron rule’ in Japanese, we don’t say that in English. You should be most careful with such seemingly correct but incorrect translations.
2. Always re-read the translated text yourself.
It’s important to keep checking everything.
If you use a translation tool, there will be very few typos or errors, but you should still re-read the text. If the meaning is not clear when you read it yourself, change the text. Even if it’s the right translation, it’s no good if the person who wrote it can’t understand it.
Needless to say, you shouldn’t translate into a language you don’t know at all.
A recommended translation tool
Now you know the advantages and disadvantages of translation tools and what to look out for when using them. Now I would like to introduce a translation tool that I use and recommend: DeepL.
DeepL is free to use. It currently seems to support 31 languages for translation (as of February 2023). This translation tool is the most accurate one I have ever tried. To be honest, I didn’t trust translation tools at all, but I was impressed by the accuracy of DeepL. I use it all the time and find it very useful.
DeepL is a very good translation tool. Nevertheless, I recommend that you use it with the two pieces of advice mentioned above in mind. If you do, you can easily get an accurate translation!
Well, I have presented in this article the advantages and disadvantages of translation tools, the cautions for their use and the translation tools I recommend.
However, a translation tool is only one tool. If you don’t know how to use it properly, you won’t be able to use it well. I believe that in order to use a translation tool correctly, you need to have a minimum knowledge of the language.
Don’t just rely on handy translation tools. Keep improving your own language skills too!

みなさんは、Google翻訳のような翻訳ツールを使ったことがありますか。翻訳ツールを使えば、一つの文章を色々な言語に簡単に翻訳できて、とても便利ですよね。
このサイトの記事は英語と日本語で書いていますが、実は英語の記事を書く時にある翻訳ツールを使っています。私は英語で文章が全く書けないわけではないですが、翻訳ツールを使った方が効率が良いからです。
ただし、どうか「そんなに便利なら、翻訳ツールさえあれば言語を勉強しなくていい」と思わないでください。確かに最近の翻訳ツールはとても良いですが、それでも完璧な翻訳はできません。必ず自分で翻訳を確認する必要があります。
そういうわけで、この記事では翻訳ツールのメリットとデメリット、使用上の注意についてお話した上で、私が使っているお勧めの翻訳ツールの紹介をしたいと思います。
翻訳ツールのメリット
翻訳ツールのメリットは、もちろん誰でも簡単に言語を翻訳できることです。
無料で利用できるものも多いですし、同じ文章を一度に色々な言語に翻訳できるのでとても便利です。翻訳したい言語を全然知らなくても大丈夫なので、旅行の時に通訳代わりに使えたりしますよね。
文章を翻訳するだけでなく、単語やフレーズをちょっと調べたい時にも使えます。
翻訳ツールのデメリット
翻訳ツールのデメリットは、不自然な翻訳になりがちなことです。
翻訳ツールは、基本的にある言語の単語を他の言語のほとんど同じ意味の単語に置き換えることで翻訳しています。なので、両方の言語に似た意味の単語がなければ翻訳できませんし、似た意味の単語でもニュアンスが変わることがあります。
自分の知らない言語にも翻訳できますが、その場合は本当に正しい翻訳なのか確認できません。意図せずに変なことを言ってしまう可能性があります。
翻訳ツールを使用する時の注意
翻訳ツールは便利だけど、残念ながら完璧ではありません。それでも、使いたい場面は結構あると思います。以下に私が翻訳ツールを使用する時に気を付けている注意点を二つ紹介するので、参考にしてみてください！
１．文章は短く、分かりやすくする。
これは鉄則です。上述した通り、翻訳ツールは単語を置き換えて翻訳しているので、長く複雑な文になればなるほど精度が落ちる傾向があります。長い一文を翻訳するよりも、短い文を二つ翻訳した方が上手く行きます。
それから、主語や単語を省略しない方がいいです。日本語では主語をよく省略しますが、英語では省略しないので、主語なしの日本語の文章を英語に翻訳すると変になります。最近の翻訳ツールはよくできているので勝手に主語を補ってくれたりしますが、自分が意図したものと違うことがよくあるので確認しないといけません。
そして、その言語固有の表現や単語は翻訳できません。例えば、「着物」は ‘kimono’ としか言えませんよね。そういう時は、その単語や表現を別の言葉で言い換える必要があります。「着物」の場合なら、「日本の伝統的な衣装」でしょうか。
また、意味は同じでも言語によって言い回しが違うものも注意が必要です。例えば、「鉄則」は英語で ‘the first rule / the number one rule’ です。日本語で「鉄の規則」だから ‘Iron rule’ ではありません。こういう一見するとありそうな直訳には一番注意が必要ですね。
２．翻訳した文章は必ず自分で読み直す。
何事も確認を怠らないことが大事ですよ。
翻訳ツールを使えば誤字・脱字はほとんどないと思いますが、それでも読み直した方がいいです。自分で読んでみた時に意味がよく分からないなら、文章を変えましょう。たとえそれが正しい翻訳だったとしても、書いた本人が理解出来なければ意味がありません。
言うまでもないですが、自分が全く知らない言語には翻訳しない方がいいですよ。
お勧めの翻訳ツール
これで翻訳ツールのメリットとデメリット、注意点が確認できたと思います。それでは、これから私が使っているお勧めの翻訳ツールを紹介したいと思います。DeepLという翻訳ツールです。
DeepLは、無料で利用できます。現在は31言語の翻訳に対応しているようです（2023年2月時点）。この翻訳ツールは、私が今まで試した中で一番精度が高かったです。正直に言うと、私は翻訳ツールを全然信用していなかったのですが、DeepLの精度の高さには感動しました。いつもお世話になっております。
DeepLはとてもよくできた翻訳ツールです。それでも、上述した二つの注意事項に気を付けて使うことをお勧めします。そうすれば、簡単に正確な翻訳ができますよ！
さて、この記事では翻訳ツールのメリットとデメリット、注意点を踏まえた上で、お勧めの便利な翻訳ツールを紹介しました。
しかし、翻訳ツールも一つの道具です。正しい使い方を知らなければ上手く使えません。翻訳ツールを正しく使うためには、やはり最低限の言語の知識が必要だと私は思います。
