Hello, everyone!
Do you know where the capital of Australia is?
Sydney is probably the most famous city in Australia, but Sydney is not the capital.
In fact, there was some controversy over whether Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney or Melbourne, should be the capital, resulting in the creation of a new city in a location roughly halfway between the two cities.
Canberra, Australia’s capital, was born through such a process.
An interesting aspect of Canberra is that the town was designed by American architect Walter Burley Griffin.
I moved to Canberra last year for my partner’s reasons.
I was a bit confused at first as it is a completely different city to Melbourne, where I had lived for about six years, but I am now enjoying life here to the full.
So I would like to introduce you to Canberra, a fascinating city that is little known despite being the capital!
This is the opinion of one individual who has lived here for a year, and should be read as a reference only.
What’s good about Canberra
As I mentioned at the outset, Canberra is a new, planned city.
Some people feel that they don’t like the artificial, perfectly maintained feel of the city, but I like the neatness of the roads and residential areas.
First, let’s look at what I think is good about Canberra!
Abundant nature
Located inland, halfway between Melbourne and Sydney (but actually quite close to Sydney), Canberra is just rich in nature.
There are also many spacious parks in the city centre, where many people enjoy jogging and picnicking on sunny days.
One of Canberra’s greatest attractions is that it is a green capital city, far removed from the image of a capital city like Tokyo, which is a glamorous, bustling city.
All the photos below were taken in Commonwealth Park, which is within walking distance of the city centre.
Shown in the top left and bottom photos is Lake Burley Griffin, in the centre of the town.
It is named after the architect who designed the town of Canberra, first mentioned.
Lake Burley Griffin is a man-made lake.
The area where the lake now stands was once an idyllic grassland where sheep grazing took place.
The picture makes the lake look clean, but as you can see from the water in the picture below, the water in the lake is brown and muddy.
This is said to be because an alien species of carp, which has been introduced into the lake by mistake, habitually makes the water muddy.
Australia has no tolerance for non-native species in order to protect its native animals.
Currently, the spreading of a disease that only affects carp is being considered to get rid of carp in lakes, but this is being carefully discussed as it would be very dangerous if other animals were to become collateral damage.
If the water were cleaner, it would be a very nice lake.
Commonwealth Park is adjacent to the north side of Lake Burley Griffin and is busy with people walking their dogs, walking, jogging and picnicking.
In addition to the fireworks display at New Year, it is also the venue for Canberra’s spring festival, Floriade, mentioned at the beginning of this article.
Concerts are sometimes held here.
Incidentally, Floriade is a flower festival with free admission.
After the period is over, it seems you can take home the bulbs of the flowers that have delighted your eyes.
That’s good for flower lovers like me.
Lots of wildlife to see
The abundance of nature naturally means that there are also many animals.
The bird pictures were used in another post.

Top left is a photo of a possum.
Possums are nocturnal marsupials that are widespread in the eastern regions of Australia.
They are about the size of a small cat, but are cute, quiet-looking creatures.
They climb down from trees at night.
Kangaroos can also be seen in the open areas outside the city, although I did not include a photo.
However, I have not seen any koalas so far.
As for reptiles, it seems that there are blue-tongue lizards.
I also like reptiles, but I have yet to see any of them in the wild, so I would like to see them one day.
There are also many rabbits in the Commonwealth Park referred to above.
Rabbits are not native to Australia, but they are on the loose because they are too fertile to be exterminated.
In spring, there are lots of baby rabbits, which are cute.
Quiet, calm town
Perhaps it is because I am used to a big city like Melbourne, but Canberra, with a population less than a tenth of Melbourne’s, seems quiet and calm, even in the city centre.
I grew up in rural Niigata, so it is very easy for me to spend time in this quiet town.
Canberra is home to a number of government departments and major universities, so there are many young people living here.
The average age of residents is 38 years.

It is said to be a safe town and is recommended for those who do not like overly busy towns.
Canberra’s not good points
No town is perfect.
Canberra has many good things about it, such as those mentioned above, but of course there are also some things that are not so good.
Below are some of my complaints.
Few shops and early closing times
Canberra is still less populated than the big cities like Melbourne and Sydney.
As a result, some of the chain shops that are in Melbourne and Sydney are not available in Canberra.
The Melbourne chain shops that I personally liked are not in Canberra.
There is a Muji, but no Daiso.
On top of that, most shops close at around 5pm because there are so few people.
People who work full time on weekdays may not be able to go shopping.
Then you might think that everywhere is crowded on weekends, but it is not.
It may simply be that there are fewer people, but it is a bit strange.
There is a shopping centre near our apartment, and the car park there is almost full on weekdays and almost empty on weekends.
I thought it was strange, so I asked my partner about it and he said it was probably because everyone uses it instead of parking when they go to work.
It still seems very strange to me, because it was so hard to find a parking space anywhere in Melbourne.
In my opinion, Canberra is still a city on the rise.
I think there will be more people, more convenient shops and more fun things to do in the future.
However, at this stage, the impression of the city is that it is ‘a town of flats and office buildings’.
A lot of things are expensive
Canberra gives the impression of being more like a country town in Japan, but it is still the capital city, so many things are expensive.
I think it was the town where the people with the highest incomes in Australia live, so you could say it was a rich town to begin with.
Naturally, rent is also expensive and the prices of supermarket products are a little more expensive.
It would be better if the quality of the food was better for that, but I don’t think the quality is any better.
Many times I have thought that in Melbourne I could eat better food at a lower price.
Public transport is not very good, so you basically need a car.
I don’t think this will all improve without more people, so you can’t help but feel like you have no choice.
(Well, Melbourne’s trains and buses were pretty bad too)
I don’t know if it’s really safe
Data such as crime rates show that Canberra is a very safe city.
However, the streets with few people and buildings are quite dark at night, even in the city centre.
Parks and other areas are even darker.
I was told that as the observatory is located on the outskirts of the city, the city lights are regulated at night so as not to interfere with the research.
When the sun goes down, it is dark and it is difficult to see the roads, but the stars are more visible.
I have strong anxiety about walking alone at night in Canberra because, above all, it is dimly lit and uninhabited.
Melbourne is a big city, so the crime rate is higher than Canberra, but there are still many people in the city after 9pm.
So when I finished my lessons at 9pm at the Japanese language school and took the train home alone, I didn’t feel too scared when I walked home along the main street, which is relatively busy with people.
I am also inwardly frightened that I am actually more dangerous than in Melbourne, as traces of drug use have been found in the park in front of my current apartment (where children usually play) and I sometimes hear strange noises in the middle of the night.
Someone who has lived in the area for a long time has also told me that it is better not to go home alone at night.
Australians are usually very kind and are willing to help you if you have a problem.
It’s nice and quiet when there are few people around, but I think that makes me feel uneasy about security.
I don’t think this is specific to Canberra, but you should be wary of walking alone at night.
Conclusion
There is a saying in Japanese: 住めば都 [sumeba miyako] (home is where you make it).
It may take a little time to get used to any town at first, but once you get used to living there, you will feel at home.
Before living in Melbourne, I hated the bustling city.
But after living in Melbourne for a while, I realised that the more people there are, the more fun there is, and I started to like Melbourne.
I think I’m more concerned about the uncertainty and worry because I’ve only been in Canberra for a year and I don’t have any acquaintances or family nearby.
However, I really love Canberra’s nature and the animals that live there.
It may be difficult to live here due to the high cost of living, but I recommend that you visit on a trip.
Although not specifically mentioned in this article, there is also a zoo and a museums, so there is plenty of sightseeing to be enjoyed!
Canberra is about 7-8 hours drive from Melbourne and 3 hours from Sydney.
Of course, you can also get there by plane.
It is closer from Sydney than from Melbourne, so it is a good idea to travel to both Sydney and Canberra.

みなさん、こんにちは！
みなさん、オーストラリアの首都は何処かご存知ですか。
オーストラリアで一番有名な町は恐らくシドニーですが、シドニーは首都ではありません。
実際にオーストラリアの二大都市であるシドニーかメルボルンのどちらを首都にするかで論争がありましたが、結果的には両都市の大体中間地点に位置する場所に新しく都市を作ることになりました。
そうした経緯を経て誕生したのが、オーストラリアの首都、キャンベラです。
キャンベラの面白い所は、ウォルター・バーリー・グリフィンと言うアメリカ人の建築家によって設計された町だと言う点です。
私はパートナーの都合で去年キャンベラに引っ越してきました。
それまで約六年住んでいたメルボルンとは全然趣が違う町なので最初はちょっと戸惑いましたが、現在はこちらでの生活を満喫しています。
そこで、今回は首都なのにあまり知られていない魅力的な町、キャンベラについてご紹介したいと思います！
一個人が一年間住んでみた感想なので、あくまで参考として読んでいただけたらと思います。
キャンベラのいいところ
最初にお話しした通り、キャンベラは計画的に建設された新しい都市です。
人工的に完璧に整備された感じが好きじゃないと感じる人もいるそうですが、私は道路や住宅街などがきちんとしていて良いと思います。
まずは、私が思うキャンベラのいいところを見ていきましょう！
自然が多い
メルボルンとシドニーの中間地点（でも実は結構シドニー寄り）の内陸に位置するキャンベラは、とにかく自然が豊富です。
市内中心部にも広々とした公園がたくさんあって、天気のいい日には多くの人がジョギングやピクニックを楽しんでいます。
東京のような華やかでにぎやかな町と言う首都のイメージとはかけ離れた、緑豊かな首都と言うのがキャンベラの最大の魅力の一つだと思います。
下の写真は、全て市内中心部から徒歩圏内にあるコモンウェルスパークで撮ったものです。
左上と下の写真に写っているのが、町の中心にあるバーレー・グリフィン湖です。
最初に紹介したキャンベラの町を設計した建築家にちなんで名づけられました。
このバーレー・グリフィン湖は、人工の湖です。
現在湖がある場所は、かつて羊の放牧がおこなわれていたのどかな草原でした。
写真だときれいな湖に見えますが、下の写真の水を見るとお分かりの通り、湖の水は茶色く濁っています。
これは、何かの手違いで湖に混入してしまった外来種の鯉が、習性で水を濁らせてしまうからだと言われています。
オーストラリアは固有種の動物達を守るため、外来種には容赦しません。
現在は湖の鯉を駆除するために鯉だけがかかる病気をばらまくことが検討されていますが、他の動物が巻き添えを食らうと大変なので慎重に議論が続けられています。
水がもっときれいだったら、すごく素敵な湖だと思います。
コモンウェルスパークはバーレー・グリフィン湖の北側に隣接する公園で、犬の散歩をしたり、ウォーキングやジョギングをしたり、ピクニックをしたりする人で賑わっています。
新年には花火が上がる他、冒頭に載せたキャンベラの春のお祭り、フロリア―ドの会場にもなります。
時々コンサートが開かれたりもしています。
ちなみに、フロリア―ドは入場無料の花祭りです。
期間が終わった後は、目を楽しませてくれた花達の球根を持って帰っていいみたいです。
私のように花が好きな人にはいいですよね。
たくさんの野生動物に会える
自然が多いということは、当然動物もたくさんいます。

左上はポッサムの写真です。
ポッサムはオーストラリアの東側の地域に広く生息する夜行性の有袋類です。
小型の猫ぐらいの大きさがありますが、大人しい印象の可愛い生き物です。
夜になると木から降りてきます。
写真は載せませんでしたが、市外の開けたところに行くとカンガルーも見掛けます。
ただ、コアラは今のところみたことがありません。
爬虫類に関しては、ブルータンリザードがいるみたいです。
私は爬虫類も好きですが、未だに野生の子達はお目に掛ったことがないのでいつか見てみたいですね。
上で紹介したコモンウェルスパークにはうさぎもたくさんいます。
うさぎはオーストラリアの固有種じゃないですが、繁殖力が強すぎて駆除不能なので野放しな状態です。
春は子うさぎがたくさんいて可愛いですよ。
静かで落ち着いた町
メルボルンと言う大都市に慣れてしまったせいかもしれませんが、人口がメルボルンの十分の一以下のキャンベラは、市内中心部でも静かで落ち着いた印象があります。
私は新潟の田舎育ちなので、静かな町はとても過ごしやすいです。
キャンベラは政府機関や主要な大学がある場所なので、若い人がたくさん集まって住んでいます。
住民の平均年齢は38歳だそうです。

治安も良い町だと言われているので、にぎやかすぎる町が苦手な人にはお勧めです。
キャンベラのよくないところ
どんな町も完璧ではありません。
キャンベラは上で紹介したようないいところもたくさんありますが、もちろんあまりよくないと思う所もあります。
以下では、私が不満に思っていることを紹介します。
お店が少なく、閉店時間が早い
キャンベラはメルボルンやシドニーと言った大都市と比べるとまだまだ人口が少ないです。
その為、メルボルンやシドニーにあるチェーン店がないことがあります。
私が個人的に気に入っていたメルボルンのチェーン店もキャンベラにありません。
無印良品はありますが、ダイソーはありません。
その上、人が少ないので大抵のお店が午後五時くらいに閉店します。
平日にフルタイムで働いている人は買い物に行けないのではないかと思います。
それなら週末はどこも混んでいるのかと言うと、そうでもないのでちょっと不思議です。
単純に人が少ないだけですかね。
私達が住んでいるアパートの近くにショッピングセンターがあるのですが、そこの駐車場は平日はほぼ満車で、週末はほとんど車がありません。
変だと思うのでパートナーに聞いてみたところ、みんな出勤時の駐車場代わりに使っているからじゃないかとのことでした。
メルボルンでは何処に行っても駐車場を探すのに苦労したぐらいなので、未だにすごく奇妙に思います。
キャンベラはまだまだ成長途中の町だと思います。
今後もっと人が増えて、もっと便利なお店や楽しい施設が増えていくだろうと思います。
ただ、今の段階では「アパートとオフィスビルの町」と言うのが市内の印象です。
色々な物が高い
キャンベラは日本で言うなら田舎町に近い印象ですが、それでも首都なので色々な物が高いです。
オーストラリアで一番高収入な人達が住んでいる町だったと思うので、そもそもお金持ちの町と言ってもいいかも知れません。
当然家賃も高いですし、スーパーの商品の価格も少し割高です。
その分品質がいいものがあるならまだ良いのですが、別段品質が良いとも思いません。
メルボルンならもっと安く美味しいものが食べられると思ったことが何度もあります。
公共交通機関もあまりよくないので、基本的に車必須です。
こればっかりは人が増えないと改善しないだろうなと思うので、仕方ない気がします。
（まあ、メルボルンの電車やバスも結構酷かったですが）
本当に治安が良いのか分からない
犯罪率などのデータを見ると、キャンベラはとても治安がいい町です。
ただ、人も建物も少ない町並みは、市内中心部であっても夜になると結構暗いです。
公園などはもっと暗いです。
郊外に天文台があるので、研究の妨げにならないよう夜間の街の明かりが規制されていると聞きました。
日が落ちると暗くて道が見えにくいですが、その分星はよく見えます。
私が夜一人でキャンベラの町を出歩くことに強い不安を感じているのは、何より薄暗くて人がいないからです。
メルボルンは大都市なので犯罪率もキャンベラより高いですが、市内には午後九時過ぎでもたくさんの人がいます。
なので、日本語学校で午後九時にレッスンを終えて一人で電車で帰る時も、人通りが比較的多い大通りを歩いて帰る分にはあまり怖くなかったです。
また、現在住んでいるアパートの前にある公園でドラック使用の痕跡が見つかったことや（普段子供たちが遊んでいる場所です）、夜中に奇声が聞こえることがあることなどから、実はメルボルンより危ないのではないかと内心怯えています。
現地に長く住んでいる人からも、「夜は一人で帰らない方がいい」と言われたこともあります。
オーストラリア人はたいていみんな親切なので、困った事があれば進んで助けてくれます。
人が少ないのは静かで良いんですが、その分治安に関しては不安が残るなと思います。
キャンベラに限ったことではないと思いますが、夜間の一人歩きは警戒した方がいいですね。
おわりに
日本語には「住めば都」と言う言葉があります。
どんな町も最初は馴染むまでちょっと時間が掛かるかも知れませんが、住み慣れて来ると居心地がよくなるものです。
メルボルンに住む前、私はにぎやかな町が嫌いでした。
でもメルボルンにしばらく住んでいる内に、人が多い分楽しいこともたくさんあると知り、メルボルンが好きになりました。
キャンベラにはまだ一年しかいないし、知人や家族も近くにいないので不安な事や心配な事の方が気になるのだと思います。
ただ、キャンベラの自然とそこに住む動物達が本当に大好きなので、この町に来て良かったと思っています。
物価が高めなので生活するのは大変かもしれませんが、ぜひ旅行で一度訪れてみることをお勧めします。
この記事では特に紹介しませんでしたが、動物園や博物館などもありますので、十分観光も楽しめると思います！
キャンベラはメルボルンから車で7～8時間ぐらい、シドニーからは3時間ぐらいです。
もちろん飛行機でも行けます。
メルボルンからよりシドニーからの方が近いので、シドニーとキャンベラの町を両方旅行してみるといいと思います。
