How was the last lesson?
In this lesson, we will start by answering the questions from the previous lesson. Then we will study the ten Hiragana characters from さ to と.

Here are the answers and explanations to the quiz.
Hiragana Quiz 1: Please answer the questions with YES or NO.
Q1 あ, い, う, え, お are vowels.
A YES
There are five vowels in Japanese: [a], [i], [u], [e] and [o].
Q2 あ is pronounced as [o].
A NO
あ is pronounced as [a].
Q3 か, き, く, け, こ are made up of a vowel and a consonant [k].
A YES
か, き, く, け, こ are pronounced as [ka] [ki] [ku] [ke] [ko].
Q4 Even though the fonts are different, all Hiragana have the same shape.
A NO
Hiragana has a slightly different shape in different fonts.
Q5 In Japanese, the accented part of the word is pronounced with a higher sound.
A YES
It’s called a pitch accent. Even if the spelling of a word is the same, a different accent can mean a different thing.

We usually practise writing in the textbook font, but you can use any font you like.

If you don’t do so well this time, that’s OK. Everyone makes mistakes at first. Don’t worry, let’s move on!
So, let’s start learning some new Hiragana.
In this lesson, I will introduce the 10 Hiragana from さ to と.
If you have a textbook, please look at page 24 of the second edition textbook / page 20 of the third edition textbook. You will find a table of Hiragana.
If you don’t have a textbook, you don’t need to look at anything. Just look at the explanation of the Hiragana below and study on!
Hiragana さ, し, す, せ, そ
Except for the vowels あ, い, う, え, お, Hiragana is usually a combination of one consonant and one vowel.
For example, か, き, く, け, こ are [ka], [ki], [ku], [ke], [ko].
Similarly, the Hiragana characters さ, し, す, せ, そ are combinations of the consonant [s] and a vowel.
However, the character し is pronounced [shi], not [si]. Please be careful!
And the shape of さ varies from font to font. It’s similar to き and ち, so watch out!
Below you will find how to write each of the Hiragana and the words that use the Hiragana. Practise a lot and you’ll learn!
This is the Hiragana from さ to そ.
The Hiragana し is easy to write, isn’t it?
Please be careful with the shape of そ and write it carefully!
Hiragana た, ち, つ, て, と
The next five Hiragana characters are た, ち, つ, て, と.
The Hiragana た, ち, つ, て, と are combinations of the consonant [t] and a vowel.
However, ち is pronounced [chi] and つ is pronounced [tsu]. Watch out for these two!
This is the Hiragana from た to と.
There are many simple Hiragana. Write them as well as you can and get lots of practice!
You have now learnt 20 Hiragana from あ to と. Once you have learned these 20 Hiragana, you will be able to write lots of words!

答（こた）えのフォントは、教科書（きょうかしょ）のフォントじゃないです。でも、教科書（きょうかしょ）のフォントで書（か）いてもいいです。
ひらがなを練習（れんしゅう）する時（とき）は、たいてい教科書（きょうかしょ）のフォントで練習（れんしゅう）します。もちろん、どのフォントを使（つか）ってもいいですよ。
これが、クイズの答（こた）えです。全部（ぜんぶ）できましたか。
あまりよくできなくも、大丈夫（だいじょうぶ）です。最初（さいしょ）はみんな間違（まちが）います。間違（まちが）えても心配（しんぱい）しないで、次（つぎ）に行（い）きましょう！
それでは、今回（こんかい）は、「さ」から「と」まで、10個（こ）のひらがなを紹介（しょうかい）します。教科書（きょうかしょ）がある人（ひと）は、第二版（だいにはん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の24ページ/第三版（だいさんぱん）の教科書（きょうかしょ）の20ページを見（み）てください。ひらがなの表（ひょう）があります。
教科書（きょうかしょ）がない人（ひと）は、何（なに）も見（み）なくていいです。下（した）にあるひらがなの説明（せつめい）を見（み）て、一緒（いっしょ）に勉強（べんきょう）しましょう！
ひらがな「さ」「し」「す」「せ」「そ」
母音（ぼいん）の「あ」「い」「う」「え」「お」じゃないひらがなは、たいてい子音（しいん）一（ひと）つ ＋ 母音（ぼいん）一（ひと）つの組（く）み合（あ）わせです。
たとえば、「か」「き」「く」「け」「こ」は、 [ka] [ki] [ku] [ke] [ko] です。
ひらがなの「さ」「し」「す」「せ」「そ」は、子音（しいん） [s] ＋ 母音（ぼいん）です。
でも、「し」だけは特別（とくべつ）で、 [shi] になります。注意（ちゅうい）しましょう！
そして、「さ」の形（かたち）はフォントによって違（ちが）います。「き」や「ち」と似ているので、気（き）をつけましょう！
下（した）に、それぞれのひらがなの書（か）き方（かた）と、そのひらがなを使（つか）った単語（たんご）を紹介（しょうかい）します。たくさん練習（れんしゅう）して、覚（おぼ）えましょう！
これが、ひらがなの「さ」から「そ」までです。
「し」は簡単（かんたん）ですね。「そ」は形（かたち）に注意（ちゅうい）して、ていねいに書（か）きましょう！
ひらがな「た」「ち」「つ」「て」「と」
次（つぎ）は、「た」「ち」「つ」「て」「と」です。
「た」「ち」「つ」「て」「と」は、子音（しいん） [t] と母音（ぼいん）の組（く）み合（あ）わせです。
でも、「ち」は [chi] で、「つ」は [tsu] になります。注意（ちゅうい）しましょう！
これが、ひらがなの「た」から「と」までです。
簡単（かんたん）なひらがなが多（おお）いですね。上手（じょうず）に書（か）いて、たくさん練習（れんしゅう）しましょう！
これで、みなさんは「あ」から「と」まで、20個（こ）のひらがなを勉強（べんきょう）しました。 この20個（こ）のひらがなで、たくさんの単語（たんご）が書（か）けますよ！

ワークブックがない人（ひと）は、このレッスンで勉強（べんきょう）したひらがなを、それぞれ10回（かい）ずつていねいに書（か）いてください。書（か）く時（とき）は、ひらがなを読（よ）みながら書（か）きましょう！ ひらがなの発音（はつおん）と文字（もじ）を一緒（いっしょ）に覚（おぼ）えられますよ。
それでは、今回（こんかい）のレッスンはこれで終（お）わりです。
