As I mentioned before, studying a language is a long journey. To be honest, I don’t think it will ever end. It is up to you whether you want to keep studying until you are satisfied or stop at a reasonable level.
I love to learn foreign languages, so I’ve been studying some languages since I was a kid. Now I study English, Russian, Irish and Welsh every day with Duolingo.
I continue to study English because I need it for my life in Australia, but Russian is simply my favourite language. I don’t even know why I love it so much. I’ve been studying it for over 10 years now, since I first heard about it at university.
I started to learn Irish and Welsh last year. Both are very interesting languages.
I like languages, so I often learn several languages at the same time, but I don’t confuse them because I am used to it. But basically, I don’t recommend learning more than one language at a time. It’s fine if you’re just having fun as a hobby like me, but if you want to study seriously, it’s definitely better to focus on studying one language at a time.
I have learnt more than 10 foreign languages in my life. People often ask me why I study so many languages. The answer is simple. Because it’s fun.
Do you know this phrase ‘これを知る者はこれを好むものに如かず。これを好む者はこれを楽しむ者に如かず。 [kore o shiru mono wa kore o konomu mono ni shikazu. kore o konomu mono wa kore o tanoshimu mono ni shikazu]’? This is from the Analects of Confucius. It means ‘The person who knows it is not as good as the person who loves it. The person who loves it is not as good as the person who enjoys it.’ This is my motto.
So the most important thing for me is to have fun when I do something.
It is important to enjoy your studies and work. If you learn something you don’t like, you won’t improve much. On the other hand, if you like something, you will remember it better, and if you enjoy it, you will keep doing it for longer.
It’s hard to make up your mind to like something, but don’t you think you can make an effort to enjoy it?
For example, if you find it boring to just read a textbook when you study, you can do your own research on the internet, read books or comics that you think are relevant, or watch documentaries or videos.
It is important to check whether the information you have researched is correct or not, but I think you will enjoy learning more if you do so and make your own efforts.
If you don’t like your job, of course you can quit, but that is a last resort. First of all, try to avoid the things you don’t like at work. If you have to do something you don’t like, make sure you praise yourself afterwards. The only person who can spoil you the most is yourself.
Everyone has their own circumstances and it may not be possible to get through everything happily. But don’t forget that having fun is more important than you think.

前にも書いた通り、語学の勉強は長い道のりです。正直、終わりがないと思います。自分が満足できるまで勉強し続けるのも、適当なレベルでやめるのも自分次第です。
私は語学が趣味なので、子供の頃から何かしらの言語は勉強していました。今は英語、ロシア語、アイルランド語、ウェールズ語をDuolingoで毎日勉強しています。
英語はオーストラリアでの生活に必要なので続けていますが、ロシア語は単純に大好きな言語です。好きな理由は自分でも分かりません。大学で出会って以来もう10年以上の付き合いになります。アイルランド語とウェールズ語は、去年から始めました。どちらもとても興味深い言語です。
私は語学が好きなので、よく複数の言語を同時学習していますが、慣れているからか混同したりはしません。でも、基本的に複数言語の同時学習はお勧めできません。私のように趣味で楽しんでいるのならいいのですが、真剣に勉強したいのなら、絶対に一つずつにした方がいいです。
私はこれまでに10個以上の外国語を学んできました。よく「どうしてそんなにたくさん言語を勉強するのか」と聞かれますが、答えは簡単です。楽しいからです。
みなさんは、「これを知る者はこれを好むものに如（し）かず。これを好む者はこれを楽しむ者に如（し）かず。」という言葉を知っていますか。これは、孔子の『論語』に出てくる言葉です。「その事を知っている人は、その事を好きな人には及ばない。その事を好きな人は、その事を楽しむ人には及ばない」という意味です。私の座右の銘です。
だから、私は何かをする時、楽しむことを一番大切にしています。
勉強や仕事もそうです。いやいや続けても身に付きません。みなさんも、好きな事ならよく覚えられるし、楽しい事なら続けられるでしょう。
何かを自分の意思で好きになろうとするのは難しいと思いますが、楽しめるように努力をすることは出来ると思いませんか。
例えば、勉強する時にただ教科書を読むのがつまらないなら、自分でインターネットで調べてみるとか、関係がありそうな本や漫画を読むとか、ドキュメンタリーや動画を観るとか、いろいろできますよね。自分で調べた情報が正しいかどうかのチェックは大切ですが、そうして自分で工夫した方が楽しく学べると思います。
仕事が嫌なら思い切って辞めてしまうのもありですが、それは最終手段です。「いざとなったら辞めよう」くらい気楽に構えて、まずは嫌いな事を極力避けてみましょう。嫌でもやらなければいけない事があったら、やった後で必ず自分をほめましょう。自分を一番甘やかせるのは、自分だけですよ。
みなさん事情がありますから、何でも楽しく乗り切れるわけではないかもしれません。でも、「楽しむ」ということは案外とても大事な事だということを、忘れないで欲しいです。
