Hello, everyone!
When students studying Japanese or tourists interested in Japan are asked about their travel destinations, they almost invariably mention Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.
Other destinations often mentioned include Nara, which is close to Kyoto and has many historical buildings; Hokkaido, which is famous for its snow festival; and Hiroshima, which is indispensable when talking about the traces of war that remain in Japan.
Everywhere you go in Japan has its own special qualities, but I recommend Nagoya.
The reason is that I lived there for three years when I was at university, so I know the town very well after my hometown Niigata, and I think it is a very nice and comfortable place to live.
Besides, it is conveniently close to the above-mentioned Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, where travellers often go.
However, many people only think of Nagoya Castle when they hear the name Nagoya.
I was the same way before I lived there.
So I’d like to introduce a few of my own recommendations for places to visit in Nagoya!
If you’re from Nagoya or are familiar with Nagoya and know of more places, please let me know!
The term ‘Nagoya’ here refers to the area centred on Nagoya City.
Some spots in other cities close to Nagoya are also introduced in this article.
I present to you the following seven places!
- Nagoya Castle and Meijo Park
- Kiyosu Castle (Kiyosu City)
- Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden
- Port of Nagoya Aquarium
- Nagoya City Science Museum
- Osu Shopping Street and Osu Kannon
- The Little World Museum of Man (Inuyama City).
Nagoya Castle and Meijo Park
First of all, you all know Nagoya Castle.
It takes about 25 to 30 minutes from Nagoya Station by underground.
The castle is a symbol of Nagoya, famous for the gold Shachihoko in the picture on the right.
It has been selected as one of the 100 best castles in Japan and is a special national historic site.
The main and minor keep (Dai-Tenshu and Sho-Tenshu) and the Honmaru Goten were destroyed by fire in an air raid during World War II.
The main keep in the photo was rebuilt in 1959.
It is regrettable that the keep cannot be entered at present.
The area around Nagoya Castle is Meijo Park.
Meijo Park is recommended for a leisurely stroll with a view of the castle.
I’ve also got some pics of Meijo Park, so I’ll put some of those below!
Kiyosu Castle
Kiyosu Castle is located in Kiyosu City, next to Nagoya City.
It can be reached from Nagoya Station by a single train and on foot, which takes about 25 minutes.
As the picture shows, the castle has a beautiful red bridge that stretches to the castle.
It was rebuilt in 1989, so it is relatively new.
The castle is associated with Oda Nobunaga, but perhaps because it is not as famous as Nagoya Castle, the number of visitors was sparse. (This may be due to the season.)
However, it is a good spot where you can take your time and enjoy the castle.
Personally, I think the exterior of the castle is very beautiful.
Although smaller in scale than Nagoya Castle, the exhibitions inside the castle are extensive and should definitely be visited.
From the station it is a 10-15 minute walk.
I remember walking along the railway line on quite a peaceful road.
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden
It is my most favourite spot.
I love flowers, so I used to go out here and take lots of photos of flowers.
Most of the flower photos I use in this blog were taken at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden.
Many people are familiar with this place, as it is probably well-known.
It is not far from the centre of Nagoya, so access is easy, and above all, for only 500 yen per adult, you can enjoy the zoo and botanical garden for a whole day.
The grounds are so large that one day is not enough time.
The Botanical Garden has beautiful seasonal flowers and is a great place to have a picnic on a sunny day or to view the cherry blossoms in spring.
The cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring are spectacular!
It takes about 25 minutes from Nagoya Station by a single underground line.
The underground station (Higashiyama Koen Station) is lovely, so by all means take the underground to visit!
Port of Nagoya Aquarium
As the name suggests, the aquarium is located by the sea.
I went several times and personally found it very comfortable as it is not too big.
From Nagoya Station, you need to change subways at Kanayama Station.
It takes about 35-40 minutes.
The view of Nagoya I posted at the beginning of this blog was taken from the Ferris wheel here.
I recommend the Ferris wheel, from where you can enjoy the view of Nagoya City!
However, the gondolas of this Ferris wheel were transparent underfoot, so be careful if you are afraid of heights.
Incidentally, when I went there with my friend, there was a goat by the Ferris wheel.
I don’t know why there was a goat in the aquarium, but it was cute. My friend and I fed it.
Nagoya City Science Museum
The science museum is located in Nagoya City.
It is a 15-minute underground ride from Nagoya Station.
The planetarium was so beautiful!
Also, I personally like the rocker with the symbols of the elements on it.
I put the photo in another article, but I’ll put it below too.
It’s in the city and easy to get to, so if you like planetariums or have an interest in science, you should give it a go!
Shirakawa Park, where the Nagoya City Science Museum is located, is also home to the Nagoya City Art Museum.
Visitors can tour the science museum and art museum and at the same time relax in the quiet park.
Osu Shopping Street and Osu Kannon
This is a historic temple in Nagoya City.
It is said to be one of the three major Kannon temples in Japan.
From Nagoya Station, you need to change trains at Fushimi Subway Station.
Fushimi Station is the nearest station to the Nagoya City Science Museum introduced earlier, so you may come here after visiting the science museum or art museum.
The temple is founded in 1333, although it has been destroyed twice by fire, known as the Great Fire of Osu (Osu no taika), and by air raids.
The one in the photo was rebuilt in 1970.
If you like visiting temples and shrines, you should go there!
And after visiting Osu Kannon, why not visit the Osu shopping street?
There are lots of different shops in the shopping arcade, so it’s fun to wander around!
You might also like to try eating your way around.
Osu is also home to the Osu Skating Rink, where the famous figure skater Mao Asada practised.
I can’t skate at all, but I had fun.
I’d recommend going in the summer, when it’s cooler and more fun!
The Little World Museum of Man
This theme park introduces visitors to the peoples and cultures of the world.
There is a lot to see on the vast site, but if you go by public transport, it is a bit difficult as you have to take either a highway bus or a train and a bus connection.
If you can get there by private car, a car is better.
As a theme park, it is crowded with families with children, but adults alone can also enjoy it.
The exhibits are interesting, and you can actually try on some of the ethnic costumes!
According to the website, the circular path is 2.5 km around the park, so it is good exercise.
Please note that the walk is mainly outdoors, so take precautions against heat stroke in summer.
There are food shops here and there, so I suggest you stop off for a rest and take it easy as you go along!
Conclusion
How was it?
I have only introduced the places I personally enjoyed visiting, but I am sure there are many more good places to visit in Nagoya.
Nagoya is also famous for its unique and delicious food, which I did not mention in this article because I am introducing a tourist attraction.
There are breakfasts with lots of food at inexpensive prices in coffee shops, ankake spaghetti (spaghetti covered in a thick starchy sauce) , hitsu-mabushi (chopped eel fillets cooked over charcoal with soy flavoured sauce on rice), and so on.
When you’re in Nagoya, make sure you try some of their food!
Nagoya is one of the three largest metropolitan areas in Japan, but outside the city centres such as Sakae, it is surprisingly quiet and peaceful.
Thanks to this, it was very easy for me, who grew up in the countryside, to live there.
Nagoya is an old town with a very long history, so you can find many historical buildings if you look for them.
Nagoya Castle is a great place to visit, but you can make your trip even more impressive by focusing on other hidden historical sites.

みなさん、こんにちは！
日本語を勉強している学生や日本に興味がある外国人の旅行者に行き先を聞いてみると、ほぼ確実に東京、大阪、京都をあげます。
その他には、京都に近くて歴史的建造物がたくさんある奈良、雪まつりで有名な北海道、日本に残る戦争の爪痕を語る上で欠かせない広島などをよく聞きます。
日本は何処に行ってもそれぞれの良さがありますが、私がお勧めするのは名古屋です。
なぜかと言うと、大学時代に三年ほど住んでいたので故郷の新潟の次によく知っている町だし、とても住みやすくて良いところだと思うからです。
それに、旅行者がよく行く上述の東京、大阪、京都、奈良に近くて便利です。
ただ、名古屋と聞くとみなさん名古屋城くらいしか思い付かない人が多いです。私も住んでみる前はそうでした。
そこで、今回は私自身が行ってみたお勧めの名古屋観光スポットについて少し紹介したいと思います！
名古屋出身の方や名古屋に詳しい方でもっと色々な場所をご存知の方がいらっしゃったら、ぜひお知らせください！
ここで言う「名古屋」は「名古屋市を中心とした地域」のことです。
名古屋市に近い別の市のスポットについても紹介します。
紹介するのは以下の七つです！
名古屋城と名城公園
まずは、みなさんご存知の名古屋城です。
名古屋駅からは地下鉄一本で25分から30分くらいです。
右の写真の金のしゃちほこが有名な、名古屋のシンボルと言えるお城です。
日本の名城百選にも選定されている、国の特別史跡です。
第二次世界大戦時の大空襲で大天守と小天守、本丸御殿などが焼失してしまいました。
写真に写っている大天守は、1959年に再建されたものです。
現在は天守閣の中に入れないようで残念です。
名古屋城周辺の一帯が名城公園になっています。
名城公園はお城を眺めながらのんびりお散歩するのにお勧めです。
名城公園の写真もあったので、いくつか下に載せておきますね！
清州城
清州城があるのは名古屋市の隣の清須市です。
名古屋駅から電車一本と徒歩で行けて、所要時間は25分くらいです。
写真の通り、城へと伸びる赤い橋がとても美しいお城です。
1989年に再建されたので、比較的新しいですね。
織田信長に縁があるお城ですが、名古屋城ほど有名でないのか人足が疎らでした。（季節のせいかもしれません）
ただ、その分ゆっくりじっくり楽しめる穴場スポットです。
個人的に外観がとても綺麗なお城だと思います。
名古屋城に比べると規模は小さいですが、城内の展示は充実していますのでぜひ一度訪ねてみて欲しいです。
駅からは10分から15分ほど歩きます。
結構のどかな道を線路沿いに歩いた記憶があります。
東山動植物園
私の一番お気に入りのスポットです。
私は花が好きなので、よく出掛けて行って花の写真をたくさん撮っていました。
このブログに使っている花の写真はたいてい東山動植物園で撮ったものです。
東山動植物園は有名だと思うので、ご存知の方も多いでしょう。
名古屋市中心部からそう遠くないところにあるのでアクセスもいいですし、何より成人一人たったの五百円で動物園と植物園を一日楽しめます。
敷地はとても広いので、一日では時間が足りないくらいです。
植物園は季節折々の花々がとても綺麗なので、天気のいい日にピクニックをしたり、春にはお花見をするのにお勧めです。春の満開の桜は絶景ですよ！
名古屋駅から地下鉄一本で25分くらいです。
地下鉄の駅（東山公園駅）が可愛いので、ぜひ地下鉄で遊びに行ってみてください！
名古屋港水族館
名前の通り海沿いにある水族館です。
何度か行きましたが、広すぎない感じが個人的にとても快適でした。
名古屋駅からだと金山駅で地下鉄の乗り換えが必要です。
所要時間は35分から40分くらいですね。
ブログの最初に載せた名古屋の風景は、ここの観覧車から撮ったものです。
観覧車から名古屋市の景色が楽しめるのでお勧めです！
ただ、この観覧車は足元も透明になっておりましたので、高所恐怖症の方はご注意を。
ちなみに、私が友達と行った時は観覧車の傍に山羊がいました。
どうして水族館に山羊がいたのかはわかりませんが、可愛かったです。友達とご飯をあげました。
名古屋市科学館
名古屋市内にある科学館です。
名古屋駅からは地下鉄一本で15分程です。
プラネタリウムがすごく綺麗でした！
あと、個人的に元素記号が書かれたロッカーが好きです。
別の記事でも載せましたが、下にも写真を載せておきますね。
市内にあってアクセスがいいので、プラネタリウムが好きな人や、科学に興味がある人は一度行ってみるといいと思います！
名古屋市科学館がある白川公園の中には、名古屋市美術館もあります。
科学館と美術館を巡れると同時に、静かな公園でのんびり過ごすことも出来ます。
大須商店街と大須観音
名古屋市内にある歴史あるお寺です。
日本三大観音の一つと言われています。
名古屋駅からは地下鉄伏見駅で乗り換えが必要です。
先程紹介した名古屋市科学館の最寄り駅が伏見駅なので、科学館や美術館に行ってから来てもいいかもしれません。
大須の大火と呼ばれる火災と大空襲で二度の焼失を経験していますが、1333年に創建された由緒正しいお寺です。
写真のものは1970年に再建されたものです。
お寺や神社を巡るのが好きな方は、ぜひ訪れてみてください！
そして、大須観音にお参りした後は、ぜひ大須商店街に足を運んでみてはいかがでしょうか。
商店街にはいろいろなお店がたくさんあるので、ぶらぶら散策すると楽しいですよ！
食べ歩きをしてみるのもいいかもしれません。
また、大須には浅田真央選手が練習していた大須スケートリンクがあります。
私はスケートは全然できませんが、楽しかったです。
夏場に行くと涼しいし楽しいのでお勧めですよ！
リトルワールド
世界の民族や文化について紹介しているテーマ―パークです。
広大な敷地で見どころ盛りだくさんなのですが、公共交通機関で行くと高速バスか電車とバスの乗り継ぎになるのでちょっと大変です。
自家用車で行ける人は車の方がいいと思います。
テーマパークなので子供連れの家族で賑わっていますが、大人だけでも十分楽しめます。
展示物も興味深いですし、実際に民族衣装を試着してみることも出来ます！
ホームページによると、周遊路は一周2.5kmだそうなので、いい運動になりますね。
主に屋外を散策する形になるので、夏場の熱中症対策などご注意ください。
所々に食べ物のお店があるので、寄り道して休憩しながらのんびり進むといいと思います！

個人的に行って楽しかったところだけ紹介しましたが、名古屋にはまだまだ色々ないい場所がたくさんあると思います。
この記事では観光地を紹介しているので触れませんでしたが、名古屋は独特で美味しい食べ物でも有名ですよね。
値段の割にたくさん食べられてお得な喫茶店のモーニングとか、あんかけスパとか、ひつまぶしとかたくさんあります。
名古屋に行った時には、ぜひ名古屋飯も堪能してみてください！
名古屋は三大都市圏の一つですが、栄のような街の中心地以外は案外静かでのどかな印象です。
おかげで田舎育ちの私には大変住みやすかったです。
名古屋はとても歴史のある古い町なので、歴史的建造物は探せばたくさん見つかります。
名古屋と言ったら名古屋城のしゃちほこというのもいいですが、他の埋もれた歴史的スポットにも焦点を当ててみると印象的な旅になると思います。
