Last week we added a new Hiragana practice page! Have you seen it yet?

Here are some Hiragana practice quizzes and word searches for you! Let's have some fun practising! ひらがな練習用のクイズとワードサーチを用意しました！楽しく練習しましょう！

My Hiragana lessons finished this week. However, I would like everyone who is studying Japanese to continue practising Hiragana, so I will be adding more Hiragana practice from time to time.

I have not set a regular update date at the moment, as I will be updating this while writing lessons and blog posts. I am hoping to update once a week if possible.

For teachers of Japanese, if you like, please use my Hiragana exercises in your classes. Or if you have any requests for any practice that you think would be helpful, please feel free to let me know!

Now, in this article I would like to introduce a few of my Hiragana practice pages and Hiragana practice ideas.

About my Hiragana practice page

My Hiragana practice page provides Japanese language learners with materials to help them enjoy studying Hiragana. The update date is not fixed at the moment, but I plan to distribute them from time to time.

All my quizzes are self-made. As mentioned above, they can be used as a reference for Japanese language teachers or used in class. However, if you do so, I would appreciate it if you could let me know via the contact form. (As stated in our privacy policy, unauthorised reproduction is prohibited.)

Below I would like to briefly describe each of the Hiragana practice items.

Hiragana quiz

Based on the exercises in the Genki 1 workbook, each quiz is about around 10 Hiragana. Currently there is only one quiz on each of the Hiragana characters from あ to こ, but more will be added in the future.

I intend to change the format of the quiz each time, as it would be boring if the quiz was always in the same format. The first quiz was a two-choice question, so next time I’d like to come up with a quiz in a different format. Stay tuned!

Hiragana word search

This is a word search made from words studied in my lessons and commonly used words from Genki 1. I came up with it because I personally like puzzle games, and I hope it will be a fun exercise for everyone.

I think it’s hard to find too many words to look for, so I’ve set them to five each. In the future I would like to create a word search with more words.

Word search can be made in Katakana as well as Hiragana, so a Katakana version will be added for practice soon.

About Hiragana practice ideas

There are many ways to practise Hiragana, but the one I actually tried in class was ‘Karuta’.

Karuta is a set of cards with Hiragana characters or verses and pictures written together. In Japan, it is one of the card games played together at New Year’s. For Hiragana practice, use cards with Hiragana characters and pictures.

One way to practise is for the teacher to read the Hiragana and for students to compete to take the cards. Alternatively, if students take turns to read Hiragana one by one, they can practise reading Hiragana and identifying Hiragana shapes at the same time.

Depending on the atmosphere of the class, even a small group of students can usually get a lot of fun. Depending on the students’ level of proficiency, it may take longer, so the teacher should pay attention to the time when doing this in class.

Karuta has the image of being played in a large class. But of course there are also students who take private lessons, so I thought of a way for students to practise alone.

Place Hiragana Karuta cards randomly on the table and take the cards in order from あ to ん.
Prepare two sets of Hiragana Karuta and play Concentration (Memory).

Method 1 can be used for self-study by students. It looks easy, but it is surprisingly difficult because you have to find one Hiragana out of 46 and you have to remember the order of the 46 Hiragana characters.

It may be a good idea to prepare cards with only Romaji indicating the pronunciation of Hiragana, and match the Romaji cards with the Hiragana character cards.

Method 2 can be fun for self-study or played with the whole class. If you have Hiragana and Katakana Karuta, you can practise matching them.

I dared to introduce an analogue method here, as I believe there are many useful practices available on the internet and apps. If you are abroad like me, it is sometimes difficult to obtain Karuta. If you have access to Karuta, make use of it!

If you just want a Karuta with Hiragana and Katakana characters written on it, you can even make your own! (I actually made my own.) Alternatively, you can print out a diagram of Hiragana and make it into cards.

みなさん、こんにちは！

先週、新しくひらがな練習のページを追加しました！もうご覧になりましたか。

Hiragana Practice

今週で私のひらがなのレッスンが終わりました。しかし、日本語を勉強しているみなさんには引き続きひらがなの練習を続けてもらいたいので、今後も随時ひらがなの練習を増やしていくつもりです。

レッスンとブログの記事を書きながらの更新になるので、今のところ定期的な更新日は決めていません。できれば毎週一回は更新したいと思っています。

日本語を教えている先生方は、よければ授業で私のひらがなの練習を使っていただいて構いません。あるいは、「こんな練習があると助かる」と言うリクエストがあれば、ぜひお気軽にお知らせください！

さて、この記事では私のひらがな練習のページとひらがな練習のアイデアについて少し紹介したいと思います。

私のひらがな練習ページについて

私のひらがな練習ページでは、日本語を勉強する人が楽しくひらがなを勉強出来るような教材を提供します。今のところ更新日は未定ですが、随時配信していく予定です。

以下では、それぞれのひらがな練習の項目について簡単に説明したいと思います。

ひらがなクイズ

『げんき１』のワークブックの練習に基づき、各クイズではひらがな10個前後についてのクイズを出題します。現在はひらがなの「あ」から「こ」までのクイズが掲載されていますが、今後もっと増やす予定です。

同じ形式のクイズばかりだとつまらないので、クイズの形式は毎回変えるつもりです。最初のクイズは二択問題だったので、次はそれ以外の形式のクイズを考えたいと思います。お楽しみに！

ひらがなワードサーチ

私のレッスンで勉強した単語や、『げんき１』に出てくるよく使う単語で作ったワードサーチです。個人的にパズルゲームが好きなので思い付いたものですが、楽しい練習になれば良いなと思います。

探す単語が多すぎると大変だと思うので5個ずつにしていますが、今後はもっと単語の数を増やしたものも用意したいと思います。

ひらがなだけではなくカタカナでも出来るので、カタカナの練習も追加する予定です。

その他の構想中のコンテンツ

最新のレッスンでクロスワードを掲載したので、クロスワードも作ろうと思っています。レッスンでは英語から日本語に翻訳する形にしましたが、ヒントも日本語で書いたものも作りたいです。

ところで、みなさんは「ノノグラム」と言うパズルを知っていますか。縦横に書かれた数字を手掛かりにしてます目を塗り潰すと、絵が浮かび上がってくるパズルです。「マインスイーパ」と言うゲームにちょっと似ている気がします。

ノノグラムは数字をヒントにしますが、私の場合はマス目にひらがなを書いて、特定のひらがなを塗り潰してもらうことで絵が完成するパズルにしようと思っています。これなら、ひらがなの形を見分けるいい練習になると思います。これもカタカナでも出来るので、カタカナ版も作ろうと思います。

後は、絵の中に隠れているひらがなを探してもらう練習もいいかなと思っています。まずイラストを作成するところから始めないといけないので時間がかかると思いますが、時間がある時に作ってみたいと思います。

今考えているのはこんな感じです。今後また新しい練習を思いついたら、追加するかもしれません。

日本語の先生方は、他に良いアイデアをお持ちでしたらぜひ教えてください！良いものはどんどんシェアして助け合いましょう！

ひらがな練習のアイデアについて

ひらがなを練習する方法は色々あると思いますが、私が授業で実際に試したのは「カルタ」です。

先生がひらがなを読み上げて学生に取ってもらうのもいいですし、読むのも取るのも学生にするのもいいです。読む役と取る役を交代で学生にしてもらえば、ひらがなを読む練習とひらがなを見分ける練習が同時に出来ます。

クラスの雰囲気にもよりますが、少人数でも大体盛り上がります。学生の習熟度によっては時間がかかる可能性があるので、授業でする時には時間に注意した方がいいです。

カルタはクラスでわいわい遊ぶイメージがあると思いますが、プライベートレッスンの学生もいると思うので、一人でも練習出来る方法を考えてみました。

ひらがなカルタを適当に机の上に並べて、「あ」から順番に取っていく。
ひらがなカルタを２セット用意して、神経衰弱をする。

1は学生の自習でも使えます。簡単そうですが、46個の中から1個のひらがなを探し出さなければいけないのと、50音の順番を覚えていないと出来ないので案外難しいと思います。

ローマ字だけを書いたカードを用意して、ローマ字表記とマッチングするのもいいかもしれません。

2は自習でもクラスでもできますね。ひらがなとカタカナのカルタがあれば、マッチングさせる練習もできます。

インターネットやアプリを使えば便利な練習は色々あると思うので、ここではあえてアナログな方法を紹介しました。私のように海外にいるとカルタを入手する事自体が困難だったりしますが、カルタを利用できる人は活用しましょう！

ひらがなやカタカナの文字を書いただけのカルタなら、自分で作ることも出来ますよ！(実際に私は自作しました。）または、ひらがなの50音図を印刷してカードにする方法もあります。
